Cast load vs Jacket loads powder charge weight

New to cast boolits reloading and have a question, if you have a load worked up for cast boolits can you use the same powder charge for Jacket boolits? I thought I read you could use the same weight charge but don't increase the powder charge on Jacketed boolits, as the velocities will be slower in the Jacketed because of the friction.

Can anyone let me know your thoughts?

Work up loads for each bullet weight, type and both jacketed and lead. Start low and work up to safe pressures for each. Jacketed bullets create more resistance so pressures rise somewhat. Remember, safety is paramount in all your reloads and shorcuts often turn out not so good..

I'm in agreement with gc45 about working up loads for both cast boolits and J words (jacketed bullets). In working up loads for each type you might find one powder charge that is acceptable for use with both. Good luck.

From what I understand, a load that is safe with jacketed bullets can safely be used with cast, but not the other way around.
That said, do not take as gospel, use you loading manuals.

If you don't have one, I'd encourage getting Lyman Cast Bullet manual.
Not just for the load data, but the articles in the front part of it too.
Getting into shooting cast and doing it well is a bit more involved than just changing up powder weights for jacketed.

As GC45 says-- work up loads for each bullet. There are times, however, when you cannot find a starting (low end) load for your exact bullet. In that situation, I use the starting load for the nearest same or slightly heavier bullet-- jacketed or cast and work up. That is, I use jacketed data for cast or cast data for jacketed--but only as a starting load at the low end-- never near the max end.

BUllets are not plug & play regardless of type. Even in identical weights, bearing surfaces & matl are diff. I have always found i need more powder with an identical weight jacketed v lead of sim profiles. Cast, plated or jacketed, all diff.
