    50 Cal Loads???

    Hi Everyone,

I have a 50 cal Miroku flinter that I've had for awhile now and just haven't taken the time to play with it much. Think I've fired it three times shortly after I got it, cleaned it, and just started thinking about it a month ago or so. I'm planning to go visit and hunt with an old friend in Missouri this year and I'd like to take a deer with it. I'm curious as to what a good charge of powder would be for out to 100 yrds. I'm thinking that I probably won't have to shoot that far (from what I've heard), but if I have too...well, I'd like to be prepared. My normal hunter is a Hawken style 54 cal. I shoot 100 grains of 2f behind a conical, but this 50 has a 1:66 twist so round ball it is. I have both 2f and 3f Goex powder. Whatcha all use for hunting? Thanks for all of your wisdom.

    Try 65-75 gr. 3FFF.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

That's about what I use. 490 ball and a 0.015 patch on a clean bore then 0.010 patches after that. I like the Ox Yoke wonderlube patches for .60-.69 caliber. The little extra size makes loading a lot easier in a 50 cal.

I like 70 grains of 3F, under a home cast .490, and a .015 ticking patch. I haven't had a shot over 30 yards in many years. Usually in a tree stand, always with a rest. I use Williams 'Firesights', with my 65 year-old eye balls! Enjoy your finger! hc18flyer
