Revolvers - Seeking Percussion Cap Retention Tips

A few years back, I obtained a '58 Remington clone (I believe an ASM) that came to me missing the cylinder. I finally got around to fitting a replacement and had my first range day today. My selection of caps included a CCI #10 and 11, Remington #10, and RWS (I believe) 1057's.

I had several failures to detonate on several of the caps, but the biggest problems were caps falling off the nipples under recoil and fragments of ruptured caps hanging up cylinder rotation.

I understand there are several ways to address this - what's working for you?

Getting properly fitting nipples from Track of the Wolf has solved my problems with that. Many factory produced nipples don't fit optimally.

Don't waste those caps. They are presently hard to find.

That's why I make my own caps. Never had one of my crinkly aluminum caps fall off.

I installed the Treso Ampco nipples on all my revolvers. I have the same assortment of brand caps as you do. I also make my own. The Treso nipples fit all these caps very well.

Treso Ampco nipples or the Slix Shot nipples have little trouble concerning cap jams compared to most factory nipples. They fit both factory or home made caps a bunch better. They are worth the price and can be found in various outlets. The nipples might be found at cheaper prices if you search around.

If the caps are too small for the cones, you can turn the cones for a proper fit.

If the caps are too large, you need larger cones.

Once you have the remedy, buy enough caps to last your lifetime.

I have always used a pair of small sicors to put a nick in the cap body. It allows them to be pushed on hard and when fired they flay out flat and fall off rather than clog up the revolver.
