One wonders if they took down a bear with their air rifle. An account of THAT would make for good reading!
Rights, and Privileges, are not synonymous. We have the Right to Bear Arms. As soon as the Government mandates firearm registration, and permiting, then that Right becomes a Privilege, and may be taken away at our Master's discretion.

As I recall the air rifle was attached to the boat. But that is only from memory.

Stephen Ambrose wrote a book “Undaunted Courage” detailing their trek. It’s a very good read, along with several of his other history based books.

An excellent book. That's where I first learned about "real" air rifles. I had no idea they had been around so long.

Could the attached weapon have been a swivel gun; ie a small cannon?

The air rifle was fired from the shoulder, just like the flintlock rifles. Every time the expedition stopped to visit a settlement they would demonstrate the air rifle.

+1 Uncle Grinch - "Undaunted Courage", Meriwether Lewis was known to be an excellent shot - carried a walking stick he used as a shooting monopod.
