I'll be praying for your grandson. Recovery, is a long and often lonely road. May the Lord Jesus walk beside him through the struggles and rough times.
Please pass a word of wisdom from someone with 35 in recovery. Busy himself as much as possible. The time he spent pursuing the bad things? Spend just as much time (if not more) running away from them. Make his old friends who are using drugs/alcohol? Make them just that, old friends. Not mad at them, not bitter, no ill feelings towards them, he just can't afford them.

This 100%. I've been in long term recovery from a couple of different vices, and still struggling with another. The good news is, the longer he keeps to it, the more his brain and body will come to prefer sobriety. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't experienced it myself. Slip-ups happen and the absolute worst thing you can do is feel bad about them or (even worse) allow others to make you feel bad. Get back on the wagon and ride as long as you can. Eventually the mistakes will become further and further apart and lessen in severity.
If friends and acquaintances are contributing to the problem, leave them behind or honestly tell them what's going on and say you need time to yourself. A true friend will respect your decision and also endeavor not to place you in temptation. If they won't do that, they aren't a true friend and you need to drop them.
