If you use acetone in it it makes a wonderful penetrating oil. I also wipe guns down with it, then wipe off any excess to help protect from rust. This only seems to work if you don't use Marvel Mystery Oil for the base oil. I still use ATF.

I also use it as a general cleaning fluid. Saving what is left after soaking/scrubbing various metal parts in it. Works well, let stuff soak, covered to lower evaporation, then scrub as required. Wipe off excess with a rag or paper towel. Pour back into storage container for next time.

Mix it with the three main components: ATF, kero, and mineral spirits. No acetone as it evaporates too quickly, not worth adding it.

Note that there is a separate jar of Ed's Red for cleaning bores. Not using the pre-dirtied stuff for that.

It's not ED'S Red, but I mix 0W-20 synthetic engine oil and ATF 50-50 and use that for gun oil.

Doesn't get stiff in extreme cold nor turn into a sticky mess over time.

The cheap synthetic oil works fine.

Synthetic ATF will do the same job by itself.

I mix it two ways. The 4 part mix is a great penetrating oil as was mentioned above. It is also great for cleaning just about anything that isn't plastic based. I mix a two part ( ATF and Kerosene) that is just about the only oil I use.

I don't use the acetone as it is hydroscopic, absorbs H2O. Acetone is used to dissolve plastics as well as carbon, but the 50/50 mix if allowed to soak will mostly get the carbon.
    Whatever!

Probably so. I just like the oil in there. If nothing else, it adds a brown tint and I can tell the mixes apart.

totally agree about not using the acetone - besides plastics it is harmful to wood finishes + known carcinogen -

When I owned the fur tannery I used it as lube and preservative on all of the fleshing equipment knives. I also use it to clean out the bores of old jeep axles.

I worked on a rifle from the battle of the bulge that was put into a closet for 60 years. Bore was plugged. Ed’s Red did it. Fill bore, dump and brush. After a couple months it has rifling and shoots good. Hopps and Shooters choice couldn’t do it. I made up a batch of regular Ed’s Red and Improved. Both have their uses. Better than CLP.

These men and their hypnotized followers call this a new order. It is not new. It is not order.
