I noticed that the labelling specifies that the rounds were on 5-round clips. I wonder if that suggests that the crate was built in the pre-Garand days.

Sure seems that way. It’s at least pre WW2 when they still used the 1903 in secondary roles.

I waffled over it the first time I went there like a fool, and then a couple weeks later went back (luckily they are only open once every couple weeks), and began the search... Thought it was gone. Found it tucked away under a bench with a bunch of metal signs in it. Didn't let it out of my hands after that...

The other thing that amazed me was it says on it "114 lbs". Crazy heavy to be moving around!

The other two sides are blank. It only has markings on half the crate. The other end has remnants of railway shipping information that is imcomplete because it was paper...

If the labeling on the bottom is DEN then was ammo made at the Denver Colorado Ordnance plant, in production from 10/41 thru 7/44. Made 30/06 of all types. The 03 ands 03/A3 Springfield was still issued to many support troops in all theaters as well as to other allies forces.

Many years ago I occasionally stopped by Wideners Shooters Supply when they sold over the counter. When they unpacked surplus ammo for sale they would stack the wooden ammo boxes outside for the taking. I picked up a few 8mm wooden boxes one day but didn't get the cal. .50 wooden box about the size of the one pictured that had the blue stripe and was marked for aircraft use. Ammo was linked 4API-1APIT. Wish I had felt more greedy that day.

Plus… M2 Ball was issued in 5rd clips for the BAR too. There was a magazine loading tool that one used to fill the mags quickly.

Is it DEN that is repacked or was it repacked at DEN? If the latter, it could be pre-WW2
