Ideal 358501 Mold, What is it designed for?

This mold is for sale in the S&S area. https://castboolits.gunloads.com/sho...ds-Must-Sell-8

I do not want to get in trouble for discussion in S&S, so here I am asking the question.

It has an odd tit on the base. and I was wondering the purpose of the design.

That would be a Harvey Prot-X-Bore bullet, it uses a zinc washer cast in the base. Kinda like a gas check.

And where can you get the Harvey zinc washers ?
Now that I have plenty of zinc "wheel-weights" ...
if I had a mould to cast the Harvey Zinc Washers to use in the Harvey Prot-X-Bore boolit mould ... I would be in business .
I haven't seen a box of those zinc washers in at least 30 years ... still it is a neat concept and the design did work !

Very interesting. I had heard of the zinc washer, but never saw a mold before. Thank you for the history lesson gentlemen.

I've got an older bag of washers, but haven't done any casting with the Harvey mold I've got.

    There's a new option here: https://hawkbullets.com/prot-x-bore.html

That's an interesting mold. I would have guessed the little boat tail was there to change the C.G. and C.P. of the boolit to something more desireable.
Currently looking for a Lyman/Ideal 311419 Mold - PM if you have one you'd like to get rid of!
