Measuring bore diameter

I've been shooting patched to bore paper patched bullets for quite a few years using WC872 & 867 also IMR 3031. Patched bullet is .100 into the case and lightly taper crimped. Accuracy is just as good as my BP loads.

I don't shoot smokeless in my BPCR but I see posts that smokeless dont obdurate a cast bullet. Well I spend a lot of time in the winter shooting bullets into snow banks to see what alloy works best in different calibers I use so I loaded some with 5744 with 1/16 alloy patched bullets at bore diameter that I normally use.
The left bullet was a 1/20 alloy the other three were 1/16.

Some years ago a fella named Matthews authored a book called The Paper Jacket. His thoughts were quite productive insofar as my first dabbling with the adventure. I loaded for a Ruger 77/44 with 300 gr pure lead. The bullet was a flat base RN with a very small flat and was .422” diameter. Used 9# onion skin, and when patched measured .430”. 18 gr of L’il Gun produced a hair shy of 1600 fps, and a 3 MOA red dot would consistently produce one ragged holes with 8 shots at 100 yds. The rifle’s bore was .422” and groove was .430”.

Yeah, back when I had a #3 44 magnum and a 77/44 I wish I had known about paper patching. I never got either of those guns to shoot worth a flip and sold them. We live and learn...

My 77/44 didn't shoot jacketed bullets well either. Purchased in 1999. Would shoot 3-4" groups at 50 yards. Patched lead was the schizzle....
