    Powderhorn Project - Scrimshaw

In process of trying some scrimshaw (first attempt). This is a store bought powderhorn that I just started for a Hawken rifle. Figured on practicing on a cheap horn before using a nice white horn. Ultimately will put a staple in the base plug and flatten the spout plug. Image is representative of Emigrant Peak from Paradise Valley, MT. Have some other design features in mind but not yet finalized.

    Nice!
If I was doing this, it would look like 2 year old with a broken crayon, drawing on mom's wall!

    Thanks!

The thing about scrimshaw (by my meager knowledge) is that there is no right or wrong way. The technique and subject matter was always in the eye of the maker as he had time and inclination on his travels. Even a broken crayon would have been a record of the journey to the creator.

I appreciate your talent because if I tried that it would go from something to trash. I have trouble drawing a straight line!

I appreciate your talent. I have tried in the past and have done mere passable attempts. And that's with transferring an image with carbon paper.

I really like that one. I agree with toot, it looks like an original ole one. I think your scrim is really good too. I tried that this summer, best I could do was to etch "keep your powder dry" on mine and spell all the words right! I can't draw a conclusion!

I have made a bunch of horns over the years. Most I have ever done is my initials, any more would be a mess. Yours looks better than anything I could do. Your horn has a really nice color too.

If you have an 18th century market fairs in your area, you may want to attend. The one they have at Ft. Frederick in Md. has several horn dealers. One brings in a lot of raw horns for people who wish to make their own. It is a real nice assortment of horns.

For the back side I'm thinking an animal, perhaps a Grizzy, Wolf, or Bison.

The bear looks great and that horn is just the right color to make it look well aged. I wish I had the talent.

Looks dandy! Made a nice black and white one for myself just have not taken the plunge on that horn to add scrim.
