    ACCURATE 5744 and 308 Winchester

Been looking for this powder for a long time. In the Lyman manual it suggests in bold print this was the best powder for several loads. Has anyone else used it in 308 with success? Click image for larger version.

I might try it when I burn through the rest on my SR4759.

I've found it will equal SR4759 in accuracy in two .308s with my favorite .308 bullet. I'm using an Eagan MX3-30ARD, about 200 grs. in ww alloy with 20 grs. 5744, muzzle velocity about 1660 fps. My old load of 19 grs. SR4759 gave the same velocity. My guns are both straight-out-of-the-box except for scopes and I've been shooting cast bullets almost exclusively in each rifle since they were new more than thirty years ago: Remington 700 VS (26" barrel) and a Ruger 77V (24" barrel).

I won't say 5744 is as versatile as SR4759 until I do a lot more shooting with more bullets in more rifles, but it looks promising.

I use 27 grains of it to get the NOE/Ranch Dog 178gr TL bullet up to 2055 fps. Makes a great 100 yard offhand practice load for the deer rifle.

I too noticed that the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook favored 5744 in many calibers. I was also looking for the powder for well over a year. Finally stumbled across some from an estate sale for a really good price. One 8 pound jug and three one pounders. I've had very good results in 308 using a Lee 180 grain bullet.

I've used 5744 in moderate loads in the .308 Win, 300 Savage, 32 Special with cast boolits, all 180-200 grain bullets, getting outstanding results. I have also used it with 'surplus/pulled/seconds' 145-150 jacketed bullets in the .308, 20-25 grains, good accuracy, low recoil, excellent offhand practice. Have 8lb of Buffalo Rifle, supposed to be the same, I'll try when my 5744 runs out. 5744 - Good stuff, a little pricey, but charges weights are not large, results worth it.
