Well, my oldest son will be graduating this next year and has gotten progressively better deer every year. His weapon of choice is a 71 Winchester (he named it Mjolnir) and is 4 cartridges into as many bucks. Got this guy at 125 yards through the shoulder - DRT.
Guess he keeps getting lucky with his shooting!
(He has put at least 250 rounds through it on gophers and targets between seasons - seems the harder he tries, the luckier he gets).

If I recall, the 71 was only chambered in .348 Winchester. There may have been a few made at first in .33 WCF but I’m not sure of that.

TBG is correct - it is a 348 Winchester pushing a 250gr flat point jacketed bullet at around 2290fps. The rifle was made in 1936 but letters to 1935.

The .348 is a great round my grandfather had a Model 71 he sold it for $100 bucks after he got a moon eye from it after scoping it .
He never did get bit $25 of that $100 from the guy he sold it to as the guy died before paying the rest and the widow sold the gun for a lot more .
When I think back on all the **** I learned in high school it's a wonder I can think at all ! And then my lack of education hasn't hurt me none I can read the writing on the wall.

I didn't know that. Thank you for sharing. I know Winchester would make up whatever combo they could when ending a model or transitioning, I would guess that the few 71s chambered to other than 348 cartridges are a result of this practice. Good to know though if I'm ever out and see one somewhere on a shelf for a normal 86/71 price.
