What mold for the 03 Springfield?

So what is your go to mold for the 1903 Springfield? My rifle has Lyman receiver sights. I have like three different apertures for it. I’d like to plink mainly. Maybe some target shooting. Paper and steel out to like 200 yards. I have a good variety of .30cal mold but I’d like to hear what you guys like to shoot. Also. What are some of your favorite powders? All loads I’ll be shooting weather PB or GC will be between 1,200 and 1,800fps.

311284 has worked in the past. I've also used a 150 grain spire point NOE mold to good effect. Generally 2400, but have used a fair amount of 3031 also. 30ish grains if I remember correctly, but don't quote me on it.

My most used bullet in our CBA matches is the Saeco 315. Many shooters also use the 311299. Right now my favorite powder is Buffalo or 5744.

Second recommendation for the Lyman 311284. This 10 shot group with Springfield 1903 and 4 groove (1944) barrel. 31gns of 3031 for 1780fps.

How about a third endorsement for the Lyman 311-284? This 210 grain RN Gas Check mould, using #284 top punch -- has been for years my "go-to" mould for .30-30 Remington, .30-30 Winchester, and the ubiquitous .30-'06 Springfield. I have a few other moulds for the '06 Springfield 1903s and their variants, but imho it is hard to beat the easy-to-cast and great to shoot 311-284.

If you still have your NOE 310-165-FN "30 XCB" mould that bullet will do very well in your '03. The 30 XCB has become my standard cast bullet in my psuedo M1903A1 National Match Type II rifle. I load the 30 XCBs over 2400 to right at 1900 fps and they do quite well out to 300 yards, the farthest I've shot them, on paper,, steel and even clays on the berm when I can see them with the Lyman M48 Aperture receiver sight.

Two sighters then ten shots for "record" at 100 yards.

I do still have that one. I’ll give it a try. I think I have a 284 as well.

311284 or 311291. Both work great in my three 03's. I size them all at .311".

In my multi groove Remington manufactured O3A3- it was hard to find something that didn't do well in it.

My favorites for it were a RCBS 170 RN I originally got for loading .30-30.
The other is the 311644 190gr.

I agree with others that have posted. Both the Lyman #311299 and the #311284 are good choices in the 30-06. Also, both 5744 or Buffalo Rifle seem to be the most accurate powders that I've tried, at around 1850 fps.

Have used the 311284 and 311291 and both shot well. Settled on the 311291 simply because it used less alloy and kicked a bit less. Also had the advantage of not seating the gas check below the neck. Used the "the load" of 13 grs of Red Dot as well as 16 grs of Blue dot. My rifle is a 1903A3 with a two groove barrel.

I really like the Lyman 311299, but what shoots even better for me in a couple of Springfields is the NOE 30 Hunter - aka the 311-190-FN-AK4. Out to 300 yards it will hold 1 MOA with several good loads (often 5744 or some old stock 4759).

Okay. I have this mold as well. Along with 12 or so pounds of SR4759. I’ll definitely give this one a try. Thank you.

My 1903 Springfield (not 03A3) really likes the RCBS 30-165-SIL. It's very accurate with just about any suitable powder.

I actually like the Ed Harris 155 gr boolit. I have a six banger we did as a group buy years ago. Prior to that I shot a SAECO 196 TC, I think it was the 301?

My favorite cast boolits for my 1903s and 03-A3s and M1917s is the Lee 185RN boolit sized .309". Second best is the Lyman #311467 (about 175 grains) sized .309."

    Be well.

For years I shot the SAECO 196 gr boolit in NRA Highpower. About 10 years ago decided to switch to a lighter boolit. I got one of our group buy copies of the Lee 155 gr boolit and am thoroughly pleased with it
