    Woods load for .30-30?

I'm looking for around 1800 fps and halfway decent accuracy with a 170 grain jacketed slug out of my Winchester 94. This will be a thick woods load, maximum distance of 75 yards. I have H4198, Accurate 2460 & 2495, H335, IMR 4064. Any good loads here? I figger a fast burning powder would work well for these parameters and save my other powders for faster stepping loads.
    Currently casting and loading: .32 Auto, .380 Auto, .38 Special, 9X19, .357 Magnum, .257 Roberts, 6.5 Creedmoor, .30 WCF, .308 WCF, .45-70.

18 gr 2400 should do it, or 23gr 4198. Unique of course works.
    Whatever!

Any of those powders will work. Pick the one that gives the best accuracy, or the one you have the most, or the one that is cheapest, or the one you have no other use for. There should be load data for all of them on the Hodgdon, Accurate sites and in most manuals. H4198 will have the lightest charges, but any of them will work.

Thanks. I was leaning towards 4198 since it uses so little and I don't need much velocity.

4198 at about 85-90% of the max listings is one of my favorites for .30-30.

The 4198 has worked well for me, but a couple years ago I stumbled across some 3031.
I've had good accuracy with 29.2 and 29.5 grs. with a 170 gr Sierra and/or Speer.

Thanks, I'll give that 4198 a try. 3031 has been extinct here for a long time.

I like 3031 too, but it dried up a long time ago.

I may have the last 1/2 of a one pound can of it left in the US.
I've been looking for something worthy enough to load with it for a year or so.

Was at one of the candy stores today, they had several pounds of it.
I grabbed another to add to the stash.

I picked up 3 lbs of both 3031 and 4198 last year from Powder Valley. Guess I got lucky.

8-9 grains of power pistol is more economical, or Aliiant 2400 (or similar speed like #9) will do it too. A mag pistol powder is what I like for that 1700fps load. Real rifle powders tend to vertical string and leave unburnt residue.

3031 is one of those powders that, even when I see it, I pass because it might be 5 years before I can buy another can. Kind of pointless to work up a nice load and then never be able to make more of them. Hodgdon/IMR are the only powders that are consistently in stock around here and of course it's not all of them. I don't even consider Alliant or Accurate anymore. I prefer to buy my reloading stuff from my local guy, his prices are competitive or even lower than the big guys and of course no hazmat or shipping.

I've had some very good results with ReLoader 15.Attachment 319518
This is with the 170 Gr Speer. These were from my Marlin with a 3x9 scope which I swapped to a compact 4x Leupold after I found the load. It's hard to get a 30-30 to act bad when you feed it any of the above powders.

Nice, another shooter that works up his reloads with a scope that he can see well with on the range then swaps to a more handy version for hunting. I have done that trick once or twice myself to read the tea leaves more reliably than with a 2.5x scope.

That's a mighty fine group. I have some Re 15 at hand and might have to try it with the Lee 309-170F.

Don't overlook Win. 748. 30-32.0gr. I know a guy who has two brand new one lb. plastic jars of it!

With the exception of 4198 all the starting loads for powders you listed will get you there.
