    Sporterized Garand

I had read of such things and today I saw one in the flesh. Front hand guard gone. Stock had been shaved down. Gas cylinder, operating rod, and trigger group had a shiny chrome finish. A buck horn rear sight was mounted on the barrel. It was truly hideous. Springfield Armory stamp on the heel, and I suspect it may be a re-weld receiver. $600 tag on it at my local gun store. I'm tempted to buy it, just to give it a decent burial.

Was it one of these horrible abortions?

It is interesting what some will do to a rifle/pistol.

The Garand I inherited has a checkered stock with a rubber recoil pad. Father-in-law was in submarines and one of the chiefs did stock work when on cruises. It looks and works well.

Doing what happened to the top one should be illegal, and result in prison time.

It used to be a common thing to grind off sights, stripper clip slots and such in order to mount scopes.

Never under stood the word "sporterized" I wonder who invented it. What does screwing up an original design have to do with sport?-- and how is a non-military configuration somehow more "sport" than a military configuration???

I think the term sporting rifle came along with civilian rifles being produced & sold based on the actions of military ones.
They just looked prettier, had a fancy stock, nice bluing instead of being parkerized, etc.

The Mauser 98 made for civilian sales is a good example of a sporting rifle that also has/had a military version.

In the old days, you could get surplus rifles on the cheap and for a few bucks,
and some butchering, make them look sort of 'un-military'.

I started to mention the old Williams catalog.
The ugly 1911 Swiss got way uglier after sporterizing- like the M1 did.
But Mausers and Arisakas turn out nice.
I wouldn’t mess with an original milsurp nowadays- but in the 1970s and 1980s I sure did.

I ‘sporterized’ my M1 years ago by adding a rubber buttpad, a lace on cheekpad, slimming the stock and forarm and adding a rear sight scope-mount for my 3x9 Redfield. Killed some whitetails with it but now its back to gi with a Boyds laminate stock. I’ve shot a match with it too. And it all started with a bud giving me a bag of parts and a barrel.

That's way too much for a re-weld unless it comes with certificates and a warranty from the shop that did the work. And even then I think I'd let someone else take the chance.

Ok, I'm not saying these are for everyone but I kinda get it.

The pictured rifles may or may not look right but if they're functional and they were made from a pile of parts, at least someone didn't ruin a serviceable Garand.

I remember some gun mag author saying he had a copy of a "How to Book" and a disk grinder......

Might've been Mike Venturino, but not sure.
Back in the day though, that was for sure the thing to do.

Back in the 50s, surplus rifles were pretty cheap compared to a new one.
Back then, somebody was selling something like 500 rounds of Japanese surplus ammo, and you got a free rifle with it.
I rather doubt it was unissued and packed in grease though.

Back when the .300WinMag hit the street, rather than buy a new one, there was quite a few 03A3s that got bored out for it.
I remember E R Shaw used to offer services to modify a bolt face for Magnums if they fitted one of their barrels for ya.

And I lament on a recurring basis the 3 Swedish Mausers in the safe with Threaded Muzzle and Muzzle Breaks. But they were on sale years ago and I bought them. They are fair shooters.

DO NOT EVEN THINK OF TOUCHING MY GARANDS TO MODIFY!!
