    DOD A-1000 Target Dimensions?

    Do any of y'all know the various dimensions of the DOD A 1000 inch target?

    I know I can order them online, but they're either pretty expensive or you need to order a huge pile of them. I only need a couple...If I had the dimensions of the scoring rings, I could make one in Visio in about 2 minutes. I searched around, but no luck finding a specification or a pdf.

    This is the one I'm referring to:

    A two inch bull and increase the scoring rings by an inch runs through my mind, but I'm not 100% certain.

    It used to be in one of the OPNAVINST books, but was changed to a significantly smaller bull when they changed to using 25 yard ranges vs the 1000" range.

    How easy it is to find old copies of .pdf files I have not a clue.

    20 lb copy paper leaves a lot to be desired compared to real targets. Make sure whatever backer you use is flat.

    As the items I found online are printed on 8 1/2x11 paper, you might try using a set of calipers and measuring the boarder of the image you have and use that figure to get a multiplication factor. Use the factor to calculate the bull, and the rings.

    Just a thought.
    Rights, and Privileges, are not synonymous. We have the Right to Bear Arms. As soon as the Government mandates firearm registration, and permiting, then that Right becomes a Privilege, and may be taken away at our Master's discretion.

    I scanned it and came up with this. 8.5 x11 I would up size this but it might be fine for 22 plinking at 25 yards

    I believe the 1000" target was used as the zero target, back in the day of 03 Springfields and M1 Garands. The 1 1/2" bull (at 1000") would approximate the site picture of the 36" bull at 1000 yards. If you were to get the dimensions of the 300yd target, we could verify that.

    Since we are talking targets I thought I would share these. A couple plinking targets I modified and a 100 yd 200 yd sight in target for rifles that I use a lot. target104 grid 3inch high 100_200yrd.pdf Click image for larger version.

    Thanks guys!

    I was able to eventually find the dimensions of the NRA SR 200yd target:
    Bull = 13"
    8 Ring = 19"
    7 Ring = 25"
    6 Ring = 31"
    5 Ring = 37"

    Scaling that down to 1000 Inches results in the following:
    Bull = 1.8"
    8 Ring = 2.64"
    7 Ring = 3.47"
    6 Ring = 4.31"
    5 Ring = 5.14"

    This jives pretty well with the measurements Polymath made...Good enough for what I'm doing, anyway.

    I drew it up in Visio. The PDF is attached if anyone is interested. Feel free to use it as you see fit. Just be sure your printer scaling in your PDF software is set to 100%

    The one the OP posted in 1st post and the DA one listed replicates, at 1000 inches, the old 5V "A" target at 200 yards.

    The dimensions on the original target I have are;

    5 bull; 1.7"
    4 ring; 3.375"
    3 ring; 5.05"
    2 area; 6.4 wide by 10.4" tall.

    The other listed 1000" target replicates, at 1000 inches, the original "A" 200 yard target which was 9" in diameter. It was used with the M1873/M1884 rifles, the M1892 rifles and the M1903 rifles [perhaps prior to the advent of the 30-06 cartridge?] Obviously they had better eye sight "back in the day".....

    Great info, thanks Larry!

    And yeah, they must have had better eyes back in the day...The black on that second target is TINY!

    Love Bill the Cat!
