    Number of hunters by state

Found this article and thought others might find it interesting. The amount of money raised by state was eye opening to me.

We are number 7 on the list and land owners are exempt from any licensing requirements here. Plus no sales tax on firearms, ammunition, and reloading components. Great place for me.

Maine is number 6. I didn't think we'd be that far up the list.

    We're #35.
I think our numbers have been watered down by all the refugees that have immigrated here from the upper East
and lower West coasts of 'Not Texas'.

We are #47 (Hawaii) on the list, which doesn't surprise me at all. There is a limited amount of public hunting land (that is accessible) that a lot of hunters hunt private lands where NO LICENSE is required.

spent a bunch of time hunting in PA, and heard a 'statistic' back in the day, that if all the PA hunters were organized into an army, it would be the 3rd largest army in the world.
(back in the 1990's) PA sold about 1M hunting licenses a year.
looks like TX now has pushed PA to #2, 1.1 vs 0.9 M licenses, which would put both states in the top 5 for world wide army size.

#12 for Tennessee, and you don't need a license to hunt your Own land.

Without checking I would hazard a guess and state that the higher ranking States were "Red" States.

Virginia is high on the list, but I have a permanent hunting and fishing license. I don't know how that is counted. All I have to do is buy tags, or trout stamps.

When I was teaching Hunter Ed we used to keep it simple and tell the students "10% of people are hunters, 10% are anti-hunters and 80% don't are neutral as to hunting. We have to act ethically to move some of those 80%ers to our side."

Interesting in that it says one thing then lists something completely different. The number of hunters is far different than the percentage of the population that the article shows.

Texas is 99.9% privately owned land. Dead last in public land area out of the 50 states. About 15 years ago when trail cams got cheaper and cheaper, landowners got funny. A landowner might see a 10 point buck one time on one trail cam 3 years ago and now nobody is ever allowed to hunt squirrels ever again. If there is no public land, and no landowners will let you hunt beacuse they are feeding invasive pigs and saw a good deer on a trail cam, then hunter numbers will fall off over time.

Texas would be my last choice to try to hunt deer or hogs. Plus all the land owners feed the invasive hogs, then complain because there are so many hogs. And Texas parks and wildlife refuses to recognize that elk are a native species and are working to exterminate them, among other conservation travesties.

In Texas, we have places that are 'high fence' to keep the deer & other huntable critters in.
It's all private property and the land owners get big bucks for hunting their managed herds there.
Hunting on one is like looking at a restaraunt menu. Everything has a price.
Many of them have resort type accommodations and will process your kill on sight.
Want to shoot a big trophy buck? No problem, just pull out a fat check book.

The 'low fence' places are usually cheaper and the deer can go back & forth, on & off the property.

Land owners make big money on hunting leases. But it's sort of like maintaining a 2nd herd.
They normally feed & cultivate them all year to semi-manage the herd in their area.
Feeding the deer also attracts wild hogs.
Shooting a certain number of them is often included in the price of the deer lease.

There are some farmers and ranchers that will let folks hunt all the hogs & maybe one deer for free--
you just have to make your best deal.
A lot of properties owned by older folks will trade hunting leases for labor on the place the older folks can't do anymore.
    Again-- make your best deal.
