25-25 Stevens

Guess the only option for forming 25-25 Stevens is either to turn from round stock, or silver solder 5/16" brass thin walled tubing onto a 223 Remington base. Tried silver soldering. Wonder if high strength loctite might work as well. What do you think?

Properly done I think Loctite would work. I've considered trying it myself. They make quite a number of different strength/types of adhesives surely one of them would be appropriate. Give it a go and let us know how it works.

If you haven't had much luck with silver braze, you might consider Force 44 solder. Low temperature and good flow characteristics. Can't remember the shear strength, but I've never had a sight ramp come off and I've attached a ton of them. Bound to be better than a thread locker type of product. Brownells use to carry it. I own a Model 44 Stevens in .25-25, so I've studied on this more than a little. It can be formed from 6mmx70R, but there isn't any left. Another thread either here or on the ASSRA site showed how to lengthen 5.6x50R by "nibbing". Requires a sturdy lathe. I never even considered trying to assemble it from two pieces. That was done in the early days, but didn't last. (The cases so made could not be reloaded.) Soldering temperatures for all but the mildest solders would compromise the temper of the brass. Eventually I was able to buy some in an online auction, so my enthusiasm for making it has waned.

I have a tube of stuff designed to seal the engine cylinder liners. It strikes me that it should hold and is made to handle high temperature. Might be worth looking into.

A night thought: I seem to recall an article from ??? ago about a case made by machining a steel base with a thread, making a brass tube with a matching internal thread, and screwing them together.

Is 25-25 longer than 30-30. I have a friend that tried this. Seems like an entertaining cartridge to shoot.

That Wiki article is almost as wrong as the one in there on the .25 Stevens rimfire, which also plagiarized Barnes. The base diameter of the .25-25 case is .300", not .323". At least this time he got the bullet diameter right.

I bought new .25-25 brass from Rocky Mountan Cartridge earlier this year. Its works fine in my Srevens 44.

A timely post. My .25-25 #2 Remington rolling block just came back from John Taylor. The bore was worn and chamber damaged. He relined and chambered back to the original .25-25 😀. My other .25-25 is a Stevens model 44. It has a very tight bore/groove size and bullets are sized to it. I'll have to load separately for this one with a .257" groove size.
