Uberti 445LC Scofield loading question

I just won at auction, a Uberti #3 Schofield in 45LC. The deal is, I won't have it for a couple of weeks. So, I was wondering if any of you have experience loading cast bullets for one of these. Do I load .452 or .454 bullets? Please advise.

Ugh, the title should read Uberti Schofield #3 in 45 LC.

I use .452" in my .45 Colt Uberti Cattleman.

You will need at least 454 for a Scofield.

Cylinder thoats in my several Uberti .45 revolvers are .455" and I use soft lead .454 bullets. In Schofield brass use 4.0-4.5 grains of Bullseye with a 250 lead conical like #454190.

My most accurate cast bullet in my 1873 Uberti revolvers are unsized .453 diameter 255gr bullets from a Lee mold. I’ve also used factory cast that mikes .452 that are almost as accurate. The bullet I prefer in the Schofield case is Lee’s 230gr RN. (BTW, the Schofield cartridge will not feed in my 1873 rifle.)

My Schofield 255 gr swc loads will feed in my Stoeger 1873. Just does hold 10. I use lighter stuff in the revolvers.

That's hard to answer without the gun in hand and you can slug the barrel and measure or slug the cylinder throats before choosing a specific size boolit.

The issue is, I won't have the gun in hand for two weeks. This is Kommiefornia. It's a Scofield model in 45 LC. some guys missed that. I think I'm going to try a Lyman 220 grain .454 bullet. Not looking for high velocity, just good clean and accurate fun. I would bet the throats will be .455 but we will see.

Good start load for No.3 in .45 Colt is 5 grains of Bullseye or TiteGroup with Saeco #954 Cowboy 230-grain flat nose. May be more solid now, but Schofield repro I had kept popping open with factory loads so I got rid of it YMMV.

I’ve had a few Schofield #3s in 45colt. A 3” & 5” Schofield and a 7.5” Russian. Still have a consecutive pair of #3 Beretta Laramies’ in 38spl. All were very accurate for me.

In my 45s I sized .452, .453 &.454. I didn’t notice any difference in mine, so just sized .452.
I mostly used the Lee 200RF and the NOE 453-423 loaded to standard pressures.

Outpost is right about starting low because some popped open, supposedly the Navy Arms were the worst. Fortunately mine(Taylor’s & Cimarron) didn’t have that problem. A friends 1 Navy Arms did and the other Navy would get out of time if cocked fast.

* Edit - In 45 Schofield brass I believe my best load was 6gr behind the 453423

That's why I said wait until you got it in hand and KNOW the dimensions before you start ordering things a specific diameter.

What are you going to do if you load up a bunch at .454" and none of them will fit in the throats?

I didn't realize it but I bought the Navy Arms Wells Fargo 7" model. It looks unfired and brand new in box dated 2001. Will it spring open on firing? Who knows. I guess I'll find out. If so, I bought a very pricy door stop.

Mine is an ASM. Post#7 They have a bad rep but I’ve used it in some cas shoots without any issues. I use 160-200 gr rnfp boolits.

I have a Taylors/Uberti, 5 inch. The cylinders will take a .452- pin. I shoot .452's. Note, the cylinders are a little shorter than a cattleman. I can load short nosed 250 SWC crimped in the crimp grove but I prefer a 235 RF or a 200 RF. I load to around 750 ish, FPS. Fun gun.

I've had one since they came out on 1996. I use 5.0grs Clays used a 225-230gr .454 bullet. Never had it pop open once. Even tried Rem 250gr factory loads.
