I recently won an auction for an “unmarked scope in a Williams mount”.
My assumption was correct in it being a Weaver J2.5…the rear scope ring covered the name. It has a post reticle and a decent image for its age.
I decided to use my 510 as a test vehicle to see if the scope was good.
My 510 came to me with 2 D&T holes on the receiver- but till now it’s been scopeless.
Turns out that a Ruger 10/22 base fit it with just a bit trimmed off for bolt handle clearance.
It boresighted just fine and after a bit of elevation to allow a six o’clock-it’s good to go.
It’s NOT a small game scope, but here’s 5 shots on a post it note at 40 yards. The hole on the right is two shots in one hole.
Now I know the scope is ok so we’ll see what rifle it ends up on.

So IIRC a J tube Weaver has a 7/8" tube, right? Seems like it would be right at home on a lever action rifle like a Marlin, if you really don't like it on a .22.

It’s a 3/4” tube.
Long ago I had one like this but with crosshairs instead. It was on a 1899 Savage.250-3000 using Stith mounts.
If I can find the correct mounting screw for my pre 64 Winchester 94, I’ll give this a try on it.
It came with the Williams mount but the big front screw is for a post 64.

I put this can on a thorn limb fifty feet away with the bottom quartering me. That’s five Aguila .22LR high speed hp.
I’m changing my mind about using it for squirrels; the image in the woods is pretty good for an old little scope.

I've never had one, but I have looked through a few scopes with a post reticle. I always envisioned using it as a clearly seen front sight post.

I would set the POI right at the top of the post, similar to how I sighted my M-14's.

That’s the sight picture; a tight 6 o’clock hold.
If Williams comes up with a correct screw, I’d like to try this on my 94 Winchester for grins.
Post reticles work great on deer and pigs in my experience.

It looks pretty danged "right" on your 510 ...
There is just something about the design of older scopes , I don't know , they are just slim and trim and nice , they please the eye and soul .

Well, Williams couldn’t help but I did find a screw in the catacombs that worked with help from some JBW and release agent.
Sighting in was fun with the side mount situation, but I got it done and I’m pleased with the last shot - to see where it prints at 100 yards.
Back to the loading bench!

In earlier days I had a J2.5 atop a Remington 513S.
Now they just lounge in a drawer awaiting proper attachment.
Liked the long eye relief on it plus the light gathering under a canopy of trees.
Made the squirrels stand out!

I’ve found 3/4” scope rings that fit Weaver bases from a company in Oklahoma named Grubee.
3/4” tip off rings are getting hard to find at a decent price….
So yes, those old J Weavers are resting in drawers I fear.

After ringing a plow disc a few times at 150 yards with the Unique ( Bang, wait, ding!) 1000 fps loads, I tried the hunting load(23grs of 4198) at 100 yards. Six o’clock at the X was the aiming point; some windage correction will be made.
This is fun. It’s not quick, no cheek weld, but it’s fun.
I’m thinking of using it for the cousins upcoming doe reduction hunt- it’ll hunt!

That brings back memories…I grew up shooting with post reticle scopes. My grandfather put a Weaver 4x on my Marlin 39 and I never looked back. Every rifle in our family which wore a scope had a post. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to find PR’s anymore - they really seem to have fallen out of favor. I’m always looking for clear Weaver or Leupold models at gun shows.

Nice little scope. Sweet rifle as well. I had a 510 back when I was a kid. Killed a lot of pop cans and nickles stood up on a fence post.

I use a couple of post reticle scopes for hunting, and they are usually mounted on rifles I use for close range quick shots in heavy foliage. I did try one on one of my 7mm Mags but mounted it upside down so I could holdover if needed.

I confirmed the zero at 100 yards with two shots- and I’m tickled about it.
23 grs of IMR 4198 with a .377” Lee 250 gr PC’d bullet.
To the hunt!

Well you cant blame the rifles now.
I like the post reticles, but have a 2.5 X weaver with a 2 min dot on fine cross hairs on my 22 its really good for yard pests ans squirrels.
On my hunting rifles I zero at 100 with the bottom reticle of the duplex at 100yds then any thing over 300 I use the cross hairs.

I went ahead and bought a set of the GruBee 3/4” rings. I didn’t care much for the side mount situation on the 94 Win.
I mounted it on my 44-40, and piddling with the adjustments I’ve got it close to where I want it at 40 yards.
The low bullet hole is a round ball load.

In an unrelated Good to go situation; I took a chance on a 3x9 Redfield Widefield at the LGS.
The power ring cam screw was missing and the power ring just freewheeled without changing the power.
The owner said $20. The scope is very clear.
So I bought it.
I drilled out the stripped threaded hole and retapped it for a larger set screw.
It works, but it takes a firm twist to go from 3 to 9 and back.
And it sighted in quickly. Best $20 I’ve spent in a while!
