Pre-64 help needed

Hello,i bought a 1905 winchester 94 with two buggered screws. I was able to find replacement screws. The screws are Loading gate(spring cover) screw and the Carrier screw on the opposite side. Can i unscrew these from the receiver and replace or will i need to fieldstrip the gun? Thank you.

Just looking at my 1954 vintage 94; I would field strip it first to replace those screws.
Might need the wiggle room, might not!

Agree. The big problem you'll encounter is getting the loading gate screw back into the tail of the loading gate part, as when you take the screw out it may sort of fall inside the receiver, and getting it back into position and keeping pressure on it while the new screw is screwed into the tail is best done with the internals removed.

If it was me, I would keep the original screws if they are fully functional. They are authentic, and look better (to me) than new screws. This is just my opinion, and is not meant to imply that there is anything wrong with replacing the screws.

That's a good point since the new screws are blued and the gun has no bluing on the receiver. It's just irksome to see those buggered screws on an otherwise fine rifle.

Sometimes you can make buggered screws look much better. Put the screw in something that will support the head, like one of the holes in a machinist's bench block. Then tap on it gently with a light ball peen hammer, 2 oz or 4 oz, with polished faces. Just light taps and you will move the metal back. Maybe clean up the slot with a file.

That's a clever idea on the screw heads. I think i will try that as i have nothing to lose.
