    40- 60 Maynard?

    Hi Guys,

I just acquired an Uberti High Wall in 40-60 Maynard. The rifle came with ammo, dies, and about 200 pieces of brass and cast bullets. I am struggling to find any reloading data for these. Can anyone give me a starting point that they recommend?

When I got my 45/60 I could not find any load information for it, so I took 30 grs of blackhorn 209 ( volume ) and shot over a coronagraph; blackhorn209 was supposed to be very close to black; grain for grains ? Weighed it, Then worked up to 30grs weighed. I am still loading them at 30 gr of blackhorn209 weighed, very accurate for me.

A case full of black powder probably about 53-55 grains, a card wad and a 350-400 grain bullet.

I am assuming you are interested in a BP load, Deadeye Bly is right.
Depending on the twist rate in the barrel, the best weight bullet will have to be found. With the bullet just touching the rifling for starters, fill the case with good powder and a 0.060" LDPE plastic wad and go up from there. Primers, often like CCI 200 or Rem 2-1/2's will help.
The 40-60 Maynard is a very good chambering and often over looked as to what it can do. I have more than my share of them. They are light on recoil like the 38-50 Rem Hep., BUT with muscles when the bullet gets down range!

Thanks guys! I have a few notes that came with the rifle. Seems to be a mix of using some Swiss 1.5fg and Swiss 2fg in the 50 grain range with a 375gr bullet. Was very accurate shooting the ammo that came with the rifle. As I am very early into my Shiloh being built, this and a 1876 NWMP have to scratch the BPCR itch for me.

I was given a pound of 777 but I am feeling it may not be safe for this loading.
