Not sure where to put this but as it concerns hunting, at least in part, wonder if folks could diagnose this poor guy's condition, hard to see. Came across it on a ME hunting site. Any ideas?

These are ME guys, and they've contacted the wildlife biologists. Just terrible to see and I wonder what it is. Cancer? Some kind of bacterial infestation? If there was any mercy I'm with Texas by God. I'd put him down.Originally Posted by Winger Ed.

Seen cattle with similar ailment reportedly cancerous tumors though the cow was not discolored.
Contact your State Wildlife Dept. It should be shot and disposed of so as not to spread the infection. But don't get caught doing it yourself--give the problem to the State officials. Unfortunate thing is that you may not see it again before it spreads whatever it has to other animals.
There oughta be a law.....

Hemorrhagic Disease, also called Blue Tongue. Caused by biting flies in hot summer months. About 25 percent fatality rate to Whitetail deer. I don’t know how common it is in Maine though.
I will go with a simple thought that he wanted something from a Porta Potty and got blued for his efforts. Coloring is just where you would think it would be if he had put his head in to get something.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!
Could be an infection from a puncture wound (i.e. a thorn or..); could be equivalent of a gouter from missing nutritional elements as occurs in people, could be cancer, could be a physical mutation of some form. Only way to truly diagnose is to do an autopsy on the poor guy.

Not anything I know of. That almost looks like an old infection and what is left. Maybe jaw damage? Cancer. He looks happy enough and eating. Watch and see if he comes around a few more times.
Is the deer walking alright?
How alert is the deer?
How is it acting?
Snake bite? I've seen similar of free running dogs a couple of times. In a few days it bursts, drains and heals up. Looks like hell for a few days and probably is very painfull.
Things happen in nature. This looks like an infection gone wrong from a physical injury. The last thing I would do is involve the Do Nothing Right (DNR). This animal will succumb to the injury and infection and then nature will take care of it. Nature has a way of weeding out the weak. Government agencies are not the solution to anything most of them have agendas and make emotional decisions based on that agenda. Let the animal be nature will take care of it.
Definitely cancerous tumors. I once shot a small buck with cancerous lesions all over his face completely closing one eye with barely a slit in the other. I showed the picture to my dermatologist at the VA, a professor at the University of Washington, and said as much. He said, with a smile, don't let this be you. Even though the buck could barely see and would have starved shortly, he was right with three hot looking does he was pursuing in the rut.

This issue has been in the news up here and being watched closely. I had heard the other day that IF&W had seen the deer and didn't know what it was but decided not to cull it since it was acting, interacting with others in the heard and eating fine. They decided to just keep an eye on it.
