Using large rifle primers in place of large pistol primers??

I have been using small rifle primers in place of small pistol primers for awhile now without
any problems what so ever. I know there's been tests run on these and the results appear to
be the same as the SPP. Now I'm running very low on LPP and am leaning toward trying to
use LRP in my .45 ACP. I know the LRP are taller by a couple thousandth of an inch, but I
cleaned the carbon from a few .45 ACP brass and seated the primers and found they did not
stand proud of the rim of the case. I shot 5 of these loaded with my 4.5 grs of Bullseye and
they worked with no problems. Has anyone else done this and if so, let me know your experience
by doing this. I don't want to get into any real trouble by doing this.

As long as the primer doesn’t stand proud of the casing and you stay at midrange loads you should be OK. Do not go anywhere near top end loads. The LR primer may increase your pressure considerably.

I’m surprised you can install LR primers in a pistol caliber and they are not proud of the case. But I haven’t tried it, so this is a new one to me.

    Be cautious.

Why not just use the correct primer?

I'm amazed that people have LRP's.

LR primers tend to be taller, so I'd double check every single primed case.
Don't set yourself up for slam fires, or detonating against a revolver's recoil shield.

Not every case is the same. In some cases, the primers did indeed stand proud.
I don't remember which brand brass was which. Yes, I'd have to check every one
carefully. I won't ever pay the prices these scalpers are charging. I'm 81 years
old and I'm about done with my shooting career anyhow. Things like this keeps
    me in the game.

You could always get a LRP primer pocket uniformer and cut the primer pockets deeper for the LRP. I would figure out a way to permanently mark such cases though.

They can work but have a harder cup and do stand proud. I get 50 fps faster with them. Revolvers may not turn with these; you have to test a few. 45 auto was fine and didn’t slam fire for me. Small rifle are a perfect fit for spp but again harder cups

Yes, I shoot SRP in my 9mm's .38 special and .357 without any problems.

From what I've read about large rifle primers being made of unobtanium, I suspect a face to face trade could be arranged to trade rifle primers for pistol primers.

But if what you're doing works, you can't argue with success.

Yes, I've thought of that too. I gave a whole bunch of the small pocket 45 brass to a buddy of mine
before I found out I was low on LPP. O well, that's the breaks I guess.
Maybe I'll post on the WTB forum and see if anyone has any for sale.

See specs on Large Rifle primer cup sizes by US Mfg. Use caliper to measure primer pocket depth on each piece of Pistol brass - or use a primer uniformer to cut depth sufficiently to seat the Large Rifle Primer.
