old .22 for Remington 16 rifles

Odd stuff, looks like regular .22 but isn't.....slightly larger and made for a specific model of rifle.

I recall that Aguila made a big run of this ammo back in the 1990s.

I had never seen this type before, it took me by surprise...I was helping the widow of a friend who passed clean out old ammunition and came across this.

22 WRF . Just a box of hang over from the "we want to use the cartridge we just don't want to write Winchester/S&W/Colts on our guns" era

Looks more like the .22 Winchester auto round used in the Winchester 1901's first. WRF is almost as long as a .22 mag round, pic looks shorter to me. Remington came out with a similar(or same ?) round/semiauto .22 in 1915 or so . Aquila has indeed made several production runs of the stuff.

Maybe I can add some insight if my memory is correct.
Winchester came out with a "22 Winchester Automatic" for their 1903 semi-automatic rifle.
Remington came out with "22 Remington Autoloading" for their 1916 semi-automatic rifle.
    These two are NOT interchangeable.
The reason for both of these cartridges is that, 22 rimfires were being made at the time with black powder, semi-smokeless, and smokeless.
Winchester and Remington only loaded these in smokeless to keep a semi-auto "cleaner" and running better. I forget what the minor differences are between the two cartridges. I probably have some loose somewhere but that would be a project finding them. I would guess your box is from the 1940's.

Now comes along the "22 Winchester Rimfire "WRF" and the "22 Remington Special" which were made for pump guns and ARE interchangeable.
Winchester rounds originally were flat nose bullets whereas Remington were round nose.
Here is a picture of a Winchester box for 22WRF that shows also 22 Rem Special listed on box.
