    TSS buckshot load work-up

I know you can’t cast TSS and it’s a little expensive, but I thought I’d share my range data using #T and #4 TSS buckshot. Working up deer/hog loads:

    Gun: Mossberg 835

Choke: Briley Skeet choke (blue dots)/Briley Light Mod (red dots)

Shot: 28 Pellets of TSS #T (red dots) 16 pellets of #4 buckshot

Powder: 33 grs of Blue Dot (#T)
36 grs of Steel (#4 buck)

Wad: LBC30 wad split 4 petals. 20 ga cork in base. Flex seed used as filler for proper crimp (red dot)
    Flight control wad (blue)

    Primer: Fed 209A

    Hull: Fiocchi 2.75”

    Buffer: Ballistic Products ITX

    Fps: 1258 (red) 1475 (blue)

    Distance: 50 yards

Flight control opened nicely. Loaded the same with a standard 616 primer with the flight control wad and Steel powder. That resulted in a blooper.

Such shot should penetrate most deeply into a hog. Interesting.

I used #2 HeavyShot on several pigs at around 20yds(3"20gauge). Savage 24,24"barrel,modified choke-opened up from a full choke. Pigs weight was around 100-150 pounds, multiple shot made full penetration with chest shots. HeavyShot is heavier than lead shot, and lighter than TSS. The ammo was factory loads.

Interesting I have a box of Heavy Steel #2 that I bought just for this project. I even shot a 100 pound hog with it and it killed the hog. But my shot was about ten yards right into the neck area. There is some riverbottom property I have access to and only shotguns are allowed. Thought maybe that TSS would be the best possible round.

Heavy Steel is just steel shot. There’s no tungsten in it.

True but it is hard and started in factory form at 1500 fps it hits pretty hard up to 30 yards.

I found some Tungsten loaded factory loads. Seems almost reasonably priced.

TSS is amazing stuff. Turkey hunters are killing up to 90 yards away with #9 TSS. I would think #2 TSS would be very much like #00 lead, good out to at least 100 yards or better on average size pigs.
