Given the rifle, range and conditions that's really cool.

I wish he would have been a little more explanatory about shooting pointed bullets in a tube fed rifle and why he was single feeding them. The younger generation may not know why. That said I had no idea a 30/30 would shoot like that, and it never occurred for me to try.

Agreed! I wonder what the drop is even on a tipped bullet like that. I'm sure wasn't his first attempt.

Aside from the tubular magazine concerns, it's not uncommon to single-load rounds for LD/precision shooting regardless of the action or magazine type.

An interesting project. Some good shooting too!

As to the pointed bullets, I have considered using them in my .30/30. Safe to do if one is loaded in the chamber and one in the tube. There are very few times more than two shots are needed when hunting so it would work for me. Deer where I hunt run off at the sound of a shot.

Turning a light handy hunting rifle into a precision rifle is not something I would do. If I need to hit stuff at long range, there are much better options.

None the less, the guy did an amazing job.

That was a “Start with a Marlin” project from the get-go!
My Mauser 30-30 shoots pretty flat with 125 and 150 gr NBT but I haven’t tried it past 250 yards on paper. I should do that.

Never thought of the 30-30 and 1,000 yards in the same sentence.

    What's the story with this?

Project gun or from the factory?

Wouldn't mind learning something new today.

    No, not factory.
I always wanted a bolt action 30-30; but the Remington 788 was always too expensive and the Winchester 54 was beyond that and I didn’t care for the Savage/Stevens version.
So around the time that I started hanging out here, my machinist brother rethreaded and rechambered a Numrich 98 Mauser 7.62x39 barrel for an Oviedo 1916 Mauser action. I fit and headspaced the barrel to the action.
It took a little fiddling to make it feed the rimmed cartridge, but it does and it shoots well.
I just like the 30-30 cartridge l guess!

Yrs ago there was a post of an old cogger shooting 30/30 Marlin 1200 yds at a steel buffalo. Took a few boxes of ammo but he did hit OK. IIRC, open sights!! Reading the wind across 2 valleys gave him and spotter fits.
    Whatever!

A lever action isn't known to be inherently accurate at long distance. Obviously it can be done but it's not a cakewalk.

The 30-30 isn't known as a long distance cartridge either. Again, bullet selection and range time can make it work as this fellow showed.

When you're shooting a lever action and a 30-30 cartridge out to 1000 yards that's partially impressive to me. As stated above, many wouldn't even think about trying that combination.

    So...
The only time I ever saw a 1000 yard range...
I was in an area outside my usual and stopped in to a gunstore heard tell of a range nearby that was friendly to drop ins..I went there and found myself at an honest to goodness 1000 yard range...holding my Rossi 92 and a couple boxes of magtech 158 gr sjsp's...so me and my Brazilian artillery took a whack at the 1000. With no idea where the shots might have been landing I went after various closer gongs...if I recall correctly...and I skew in favor of my ego...I managed to hit 200 yard gong a few times...
I file this under "a bad day shooting beats a good day at work"
