    Red Dot in 375H&H?

I tried searching for 375 H&H and I'm surprised that I didn't turn up any results.

My 375 H&H plinker load is 15 grains of red dot behind a wad to hold the powder at the bottom of the case but I have always wondered if the wadding is necessary.

Does anyone here have experience loading Red Dot in 375 H&H without a wad or filler?

The #375449 without GC, 13 grains of Red Dot. No filler needed. Approximates .38-55. Effective woods deer load.

As Outpost75 mentions, no filler is needed with Red Dot in the 375 H&H case. Nor would I use one in my own 375 H&H with such a fast powder.

Thanks Outpost75. I suspected as much. Have you shot many of these loads?

Only a few thousand. Killiing truckoads of game over the last 50 years or so.

Bullseye, TiteGroup, WST, 452AA, 700-X also work.

Used similar in my 416 without stuffing. Seems ok but that is a lot of empty case

Not a lot of Red Dot but quite a bit of Bullseye under RBs, some 130 gr conicals and the 375248. The 13 gr Red Dot load mentions is an excellent one and I've used it. However, I've been working with Bullseye under the 375248 off and on working on a load that runs in the 1050 - 1200 fps range. 10 gr of Red Dot gets me down in the mid 1100s but Bullseye seems to be doing better for the lower end plinking/small game load to replace my RB load for such. Haven't perfected any load yet though, too many other irons in the fire.

My professional hunting guide friend in SA has used 13-16 grains of any available shotgun powder with 250-280-grain cast FN bullet for years to shoot hundreds of head of plains game for biltong to avoid shooting out barrels of his work guns with full- charge loaded and jacketed bullets. He also breaks down found 7.62x39 ammo and dumps the powder charge into a .375 and it works fine.

Very interesting Outpost75. I've swapped powder and bullet from 7.62x39 over into 303 British and that works quite well too.

    Range report:

I loaded up a handful of loads with Red Dot but without wad or filler.

All the loads functioned perfectly well in my Winchester model 70.
15 grains of Red Dot with my cast 255 grain bullet delivered a group well under 2 inches at 100 yards.
Any failure to get tighter groups is due to my shooting. I'm convinced that 15 grain load will do everything I need it to. I won't bother adding a wad over the powder anymore and I'll keep picking up more Red Dot when I find it.

Thank-you gentlemen for all your assistance and encouragement.

Years ago I shot a cast bullet silhouette match with my M70 in .375 H&H. When the match director found out what caliber I was shooting the sweat came off him like the pilot with the drinking problem in the movie Airplane. To make matters worse, I told him I was going to hit the chickens so hard they would be out by the pig line. But after touching one off with 10 gr. of Red Dot (no filler), he had a good laugh.

tell me your concern with my load of 15 grains of Red Dot in 375 H&H? Are you advocating to use a wad or filler or do you have another topic that needs addressing?
