    Canuck ammo history question

Writing an article about the .25 Stevens rimfire, the question arises....when did Canadian Industries Ltd. stop making ammo for the American market? I believe, on very thin evidence, that it was in the 1960s, but someone here surely knows more than I do.

Good question. I googled around and saw varying info. CIL was sold/split a few times. Dominion maybe an offshoot? I think Dominion sold into 70's?
I have a Canadian cartridge collector acquaintence, I'll send him an e-mail and see what he says.
    Good Luck!

Here is a reply from a Canadian cartridge collector friend.
I had to do some reading as I’m not really up on Canadian ammo production. But, in a nut-shell here’s a chronology:

Dominion Ctg Co. began making rimfire ammo in the mid-1860’s and continued to operate under this name until 1927 when it became part of CIL. CIL produced ammo up to 1976 when it was bought by IVI. IVI was bought by SNC in 1986 and in then 2007 the ammo side of SNC was bought by General Dynamics.

I don’t know when Stevens ammo production was ended but contemporary .22 Automatic and .22 WRF was made up to 1957.

Hope that helps. Best of luck to you.

There were sometimes special runs of obsolete rim fire ammo like the 32 rim fire. But I do not recall any specific data.

I was a Canuk shotshell fan.....used the stuff in my antique .16 till it became unavailable around 1970. Also used the Canuk .32 rf but never saw any .25. My guess is that production ceased at the latest in the mid to late '60's.
