just picked up my first m1 carbine .what powder and bullet do yall like in these weapons.

I like surplus WC820 powder.
I don`t know if it is available anymore.
My next choice is 296/H110.
I have tried many different cast bullets in my carbine and I have found the NOE 120 gr RN to be the best.
It will shoot as well or better than ball ammo.

I favor the Lyman 311359 and the RCBS 30-115-SP in my Carbines. My all time favorite powder for the 30 Carbine is VV N110, with H110/296 and 4227 as next best runners up.

The 3 powders that I use are 2400, 4227 and H110. I use 110 gr. FMJs or 130 gr Lyman cast plain base bullets. I have 12 carbines and all of them function well with proper loads.

I also favor the 311359 in my M1 Carbines [have shot thousands of them through M1s and M2s] unless hunting small game or varmints/vermin with the 30 Carbine. Then I favor the 311316 or the 313631. In jacketed bullet flavor I've found the Hornady 100 gr half jacket to be an excellent performer in the 30 Carbine as is the .308 Hornady 90 gr XTP.

For powders with the above bullets H110 is always my "go to" powder with H4227 and 2400 being favorite standbys. Limited testing with VV N110 does show it to be a good performer also.

The Lee C309113F over H110/W296 has worked well enough for me that I only use it and 110gr JSP in the .30 Carbine.

Like most have said, 2400, 296, H110 are pretty hard to beat. I'm personally a 2400 kind of guy, but only because I use so much of it in lots of other stuff. Usually have an 8 pounder or two on hand. Works great for both cast and the j word.

Be sure to measure your case length after sizing and trim as necessary.

VV is dynamite powder. It's expensive, but since the increase in componants cost it seems VV stayed where it was and now it's even more attractive.

Expand the necks, seat the bullet and use a taper crimp as a seperate stage. Do not seat and crimp in one step, you will get lead buildup on the case mouth which can lead to the gun firing out of battery on a worn disconnector. Case headspace's on the mouth.
I have had several carbines, found the Lyman 130gr RN plain base mould to be the most consistant and accurate, sized to the exact groove diameter after slugging the barrel. I found H-110/296 to be the most accurate powder (the design powder for the carbine). With jacketed bullets, measure the bullets, the only .308 bullets I found to be actually .308 were the Sierra 110 RN carbine bullet, the rest are .307-6.
If you have kids or grandkids, get a lot of ammo ready, mine love this little "Jukes Box", an issued Rockola.

Getcha an RCBS 30-115-SP and a Lyman 311576 mold, then a can of AL410 and a can of AL2400.



If you don't want to mess with casting, I had pretty good luck with Bayou Bullets 115 gr. cast bullet, out to 100 yds. and they're really inexpensive. Past 100 yds. accuracy fell off.

Best loads for me so far with the Lee bullets and VV N110:

- 120 RN GC 11.6 N110 (OAL 1.59", 1861 +/- 8fps, 3.2 MOA)
- 100 RN 12.8 N110 (OAL 1.58", 1994 +/- 10fps, 3.2 MOA)
- 90 SWC 12.8 N110 (OAL 1.58", 2029 +/- 8fps, 2.0 MOA)

Bullets PC'd and sized to .311. Lyman GC on the C309-120-R.



10 shot groups at 27 yards with the 120 RN GC and 100 RN loads are at least as good as what I have achieved with 110 FMJ factory from Remington, PMC, Magtech and IMI. The 90 SWC load is significantly better (2" bullseye):

Just to throw my hat in the ring, in my carbine I use H110, the lee C120-2r with powder coat and GC.

Also load the Sierra 110 soft-point. The Sierra needs 2 clicks of right windage compared to the Lee cast to shoot to same point of impact in my carbine. I load to factory carbine velocity.

The one load I have done for the 30 carbine for my son is the Lee 90 grain .32 bullet powder coated and sized at .310 loaded over Little Gun it is doing 2000 f/s and shoots well . The loading data was for a 110 grain bullet on Hodgdon sight.

Been awhile but I used to use either H110/W296 or 2400 under a 110 gr FMJ/JSP. Did some experimenting with .224 55 gr JSP in .308 Sabots decades ago but never got any good accuracy that I remember.

Never foound a need to change from 296/110 behind a 110 gr. boolet.
