I had a chance to take out some of my old favorites. My Mav 20ga, AR, and .22 WMR Ruger. What they all have in common are spray bomb camo jobs. I used a range of "techniques"--normally making a contrasting stripe pattern with some cargo netting, mixed with a little sponge painting. It gives them a kind of "flecktarn" appearance that actually works pretty well.
It's amazing what you can do with a little Krylon, cargo net, and sponges.

The figure on the right also features a kind of bushcraft knife I forged from a truck spring. I think it was based on a Filipino design. It's really a hacker. I differentially hardened it (soft spine, hard edge), and tested it by hacking away at an old washing machine. Jay Neilson on Forged in Fire would have been proud.

Here is a Ruger ranch rifle I did for my friend, it’s in x39 and it is a tack driver. All of the Ruger ranch rifles I have seen are tack drivers.
My friends that served in Rhodesia , did all there camo jobs with netting a using old socks.

Painting hard use guns keeps a person from having to remove rust constantly from the blued metal.
Painting ARs helps one recognize their own from the other black rifles!

A bit more involved with stencils, airbrush and Duracoat - custom 6.5X39mm heavy barrel AK.
I like it--it's more of a "multicam" effect. I have some vinyl stencils to do a Kryptek pattern that I wanted to try on something. Years back I bought a spare (beater) stock for my Marlin 60 and I've been thinking of using the stencil on that.

I have done camo painting of WWII German helmets for years and after seeing some of the patterns used there (especially for Fallschirmjager/Paratrooper helmets) it's apparent that no pattern is "wrong". It's more about the color combinations used. Pretty much anything to break up the outline of the firearm using some contrasting or shading colors and designs.
I marvel at the ingenuity of people and the effects created out of simple objects with just a few basic colors, or even one applied color.
Do too good of a camo job and you put the gun down in the field and you won't be able to find it.
You can go as crazy as you want with a 10-22. You could paint one to look like a surfboard and it still wouldn't be out of place.
The cargo net works really well--it gives an open hexagon pattern about 1.5" across. It looks cool if you shoot alternating dark stripes in one direction, and alternating light stripes 90 degrees to that. You can also install leaves and other things under the net to make leaf patterns. It's easy to learn. I just messed around on an old piece of plywood until I got the basic idea figured out. With some netting, and some sponging afterwards, you can do a pretty cool job.

When I do sponge painting camo, I get the full range of colors by diluting one color with the next. Ie, sponge 100% light green. Then mix that with a bit of dark green, sponge again. Then a bit more dark, and spong again... You can do it with the browns, greys, and blacks. Then I kind of clump it with mostly dark (green and brown) and mostly light (lt. green and brown, grey). I think it gives a macro-blotchy dark and light when you look at a distance, but up close actually has structure.

Once I shot a Javalena with my Comoed hunting bow .
I layed the bow on the ground while I went to pick up the Javalena.
It took me over a half hour to find my bow again since it blended so well with the bushes out here in the desert.
