Unique 4 lbs can. - what era?

    Hi, guys,

I lucked into an almost full 4lb can of Unique. It looks to be late 60s or early 70s but I'm not sure.

Anyone have any insight as to it's year?...it smells "fresh" so I think I lucked into a great deal. No smell of acidity at all. The patina on the top and bottom metal seems to indicate it is tin and not aluminum or steel.

[edit] - and there are no other codes on the can whatsoever from what I've posted in this pic.

Let me know if you can identify the year range this would have been manufactured.

i believe the early kegs where in metal, then came paper, then plastic.

A time when such things were plentiful, I know of no era.

I had a keg of Green Dot with a shotgun press and gear in the late 70s. Bought used so maybe mid 70s?

I bought one like that new in the mid 70s. Still have it with a couple of pounds of Unique in it.

Thanx Gents....I picked it up for $75 (about 3.75 lbs in the can)...I thought I did good...I was looking for the era of the can so I can look up older load data from that time period. I know some powders have "changed" and load data changes accordingly as time passes.

Much appreciated for you guys passing on some knowledge of the past.

Powders may have changed a little, but methods for measuring pressure have change completely. Except for obsolete powders, I start with current load data and work up.

I got one like that around 1983 or so. Hercules was using cardboard containers then.

I got one like that half full of Herco. It doesn't seem all that air tight. Will it stay good in a tube like that or should I move to modern containers?
It has a flap in the lid and it will take a long time to use it up.
Oh great, another thread that makes me spend money.

I got my 1st can of powder in 1976 as a freshman in high school. It was Red Dot to load shotshells. It was a 1lb can but that same paper construction and label style. A few years later when graduating college and starting work in 1984 - I finally had some money - so I started buying in the 8lb drums constructed like the 4lb can you have. I shot up a bunch of them through the 80's. That paper drum lasted until sometime around 1990 when they went to plastic jugs with screw on tops and handles that looked more like antifreeze containers. I don't think they have hardly changed since except the labels.

I have one that I bought in the mid 60's. It still has about 3 pounds of powder in it.

Me and a friend bought an 8 pound canister of Red Dot in 1973 in one of those paperboard containers.
