    Garage sale find

Pays to have good friends that know your hobbies! Found at a garage sale in Sioux Falls, SD. He called to see if 4.5# of 'holy black" were worth $25. I will have to find a use for the Fg? Might have to build a mortar, we can still get away with it here in rural Nebraska. Or shoot in in my brother's Browning .45-70? My Grandson and I will enjoy shooting it up! Couple really old cans!Click image for larger version.

Ummnn... grind it to FFG and FFFG?
Rights, and Privileges, are not synonymous. We have the Right to Bear Arms. As soon as the Government mandates firearm registration, and permiting, then that Right becomes a Privilege, and may be taken away at our Master's discretion.

Now that's a good idea! Mortars are cool.

4 oz. of F will send a bowling balling ball about 1,000 yards.

Well that’s dandy. Come down to the Red white and Blue range (Sat 7/15) we are having the State Blanket shoot. Big title for a small event. But fun shooting be sure to be there in the morning. Generally not much going on in the afternoon. Hope you and your grandson can make it. Tim

The old cans empty have some collectors value. Don't throw them when empty. Some here would love to get the front can.

Those DuPont cans are worth much more empty than you gave for the whole batch. The one in front is the best. Lucky Dawg, hope you have fun with that.

I have found some amazing buys at garage, estate sales and junk shops.

Don't worry, I don't have that much ambition! I was thinking more of a 'noisemaker' than a real mortar, shootin stuff!

Rockingkj -The blanket shoot sounds like fun to! We are going to be teaching sailing to a group of youngsters up at Lewis and Clark Lake this weekend. Need the winds to cooperate for young sailors to practice their skills? Tom

Now that the statute of limitations has expired, I seem to remember that D cell batteries will fly a long way in a small bore cannon with Fg.

D battery's would make good cannon ammo! Wonder how far they would fly? Now that the statute of limitations has expired?

I have 1/3 scale replica of a 9 pound Mountain Howitzer that shoots a 2" dia. Alum. cylinder full of concrete about 3-4 inches long.
With one ounce of F, it'll shoot them a little less than a mile with a fairly high angle on the barrel.

You cannon and mortar fans need to come to Fort Shenandoah and other North-South Skirmish venues where we shoot artillery of the Civil War era (original and repro) on a regular basis. My team captain owns a mortar and a couple of captains so I get to go along. (My function is timing and safety which I can do from the comfort of a lawn chair! )

Friend of my Dad's came to the farm one time with a mortar he'd made himself that fired cement-filled beer cans. That was in whar is now suburban Boston, but in 1950 you could still do that stuff. (Farm is now full of McMansions.)
