Win 94 30-30, prep to feeding it cast?

A good friend recently gifted me a 1954 model. I don't know much about its history but I suspect it was feed J words all its life.

Which brings me to my question, I will be shooting cast only in it and I am wondering if there are special or necessary prep I should perform before shooting cast?

I have a couple of other cast shooting 30-30's but they are bolt guns and this lever gun is a new animal for me. I recall a through soak and scrub with Pro Shot copper solvent was recommended for the bolt gun barrel.

Any suggestions regarding with what and how to treat the old girl are welcome.

Make sure it's not copper fouled. Otherwise I don't know what else to do besides start experimenting.

Use either Remington Bore cleaner, or JB bore paste.
Wrap a patch around a bore brush and apply paste to patch.
Use a bore guide if you have one to protect the muzzle crown.
This will quickly remove copper fouling and pre-condition the bore.
Shoot two or three fouling rounds before shofor groups.

My Winchester M94 XTR is a dedicated range toy/cast bullet gun. It’s too pretty to take hunting!
Currently it’s sighted for a 150gr Lee .311” FNGC over 7.5gr of GreenDot…
Same bullet (actually casts to 158gr) over 30.0gr of RL15 closely matches the original.30/30 factory load and is a deer killer to 150yds.
I typically however prefer it’s bigger brother the .35Rem…

Yes, make sure your cases are sized properly and your cast bullets fit without jamming the lands with the nose in the bore. Leverguns don't have the loading/extraction power like a bolt gun. Of course use dummy rounds to test.

That's about all you need to do, get rid of any copper fouling.

Well after several alternate copper solvent soakings and patching out, I began to see some clean patches. Followed by a few more with Ed's Red and now the bore is patch clean.
I sorted through a bunch of my bolt gun dummies of various bullet profiles and lengths. All loaded and chambered without issue.
I have loaded several powder coated Ranch Dog 165 with H4895 that my Sav 340 with its 1:12 twist loved and its off to the range tomorrow. Weather permitting.

It always amazes me how much copper and other fouling I always find in old firearms.

My 94 likes the Lee 170 and RCBS 150 FN as do my Marlins. There are many good loads, I'm currently shooting 24 grains H335.
