H4895 in 32-20

Anyone tried this? I really want to get a 32-20 but ADI AR2206H (sold as H4895) is the fastest powder we can get in this country. Will it work?

it may work but i doubt it would work well in that small a case... be sure to check the barrel is clear before firing a second shot... slowest powders i see loads with are RL7 and 4198 ... 20 some lines on the chart faster than 4895... can you load shotgun rounds down under? might look at what is used for those rounds and find something better...

Ad 2207 s faster and is what some people are using in the 310 cadet.
10-12.5 grns.
I don’t know what pressures you would get in an older gun.
Maybe 3 or 2f blackpowder if it’s an original. Low pressure rifle.

No shotgun or pistol powder available unless you are lucky enough to be in the know , when a shipment comes in.
Some pull down 12 gauge ammo.
Then you have an educated guess what powder they use and load accordingly.
Well I have not found any info of what manufacturers use for certain anyway.

Thanks guys. It’s as barrabruce says - no pistol or shotgun powder available at all for the last two years - our factory has given them up and only making slow rifle powders. Seems like 4198 and 2207 are the same so might be my best option. That or looking into the BP route…

If it's available to you, AR2207 might be your best shot (no pun intended), it appears to be a pretty close equivalent for 4227 or 1680. Also, I've tried 4198 in my .32-20 (had a bunch of it on hand at the time) and it was 'okay' but found that my Low Wall liked AA #5 better.

I use 16.0 grs Reloder 7 with a 100 gr j-word pill. Works a treat…

thanks. from what I can tell - 2207 is 4198 (one of them anyway), if you look at the container it’ll say made in Australia. Either way, sounds like the burn rate will be useable if slow.

Some years ago I tried a compressed case full, 13 grains of H4198, with 100-grain jacketed softpoint factory bullets in my Savage 23 in .32-20 and got 1215 fps with some unburned powder and extreme spread of 140 fps with Sd 46. A mild, safe, but dirty load with smoky cases. A heavier bullet would do better.

Did a ladder test with adi 2207 from 10.5 to 12.5 grns in the 310 cadet.
Accuracy seemed good at a couple of loads but lots of unburnt powder.
Like I took the action out to scrape out the powder kernels.
Still a filler may help.
We’ll see.
I think I leave the fired case in until I need to reload and do it with the muzzle facing down.

Anyone know what the accepted pressure limit is in these actions? Mine’s 1907. I’ve got some 103gr cast bullets, thinking I’ll start at 10.5gr of 2207 and possibly go up to 13gr

Reportedly up to about 55kpsi in a good condition.
That said usually the extraction becomes sticky before too much pressure is reached.
The firing pin hole clearance maybe a bit large and flow primers into the pin hole.

Test with small pistol primers then use rifle primers for the load.

I don’t really know and most people say I am just talking through my ****.

You will have to make your own judgment.

I don’t hot rod my stuff so usually with the cadet if extraction and primers work loose I back it off a grain or so.

My LGS has 2205 in stock and is my 'go-to' powder for accurate loads in my 1908 vintage '92 and 1894 vintage low wall. Both are loaded with a Lee 103gn RN and 12.5 gn of 2205 with no pressure signs.

2207 & 2206 are probably too slow for this cartridge and wil;l leave lots of unburnt powder.
