    Bacon Grease

I remember when almost everyone had a tin can at the back of their stove to save bacon grease. It was one of the best fats you could cook with. It added good taste and you get it much hotter without it smoking when frying. You could add it to things like biscuits to enhance their taste.

I’ve started using it again. I’ve come across a lot of new studies that say high cholesterol isn’t as bad as it’s been made out to be. I’m not posting to talk about that, but if it interests you, Google it. I’m wondering if there are others who use bacon grease today. I’m glad that I’ve gone back to bacon grease as well as other natural animal fats.

Yes I do. I eat bacon and eggs most every morning for breakfast, so it is a free byproduct of the cooking process.

And we all know that Bacon makes everything better.

Yes, bacon is extra valuable because it is a two part product. You get to eat the meat and save the grease for later. I use a lot of the grease for cooking my venison since it's so dry by itself. I see you can even buy bacon grease at Lowe's and Tractor Supply in the grilling supplies now. It is quite expensive to buy that way.

Bacon grease makes the world go around - Especially if you want it to taste good. One of my earliest food memories is my mother frying slices of corn meal mush rounds in bacon grease. The slices of corn meal mush had crumbled bacon mixed in it before it was poured into a tin can to cool and form up - to slice later

I've been using bacon grease all my life. It's an essential oil at my house.

I cook the bacon then use the grease to fry eggs, sausage, shrimp, vegetables. My physical health is improved since I started this.

You can actually buy bacon grease. It is on the shelf in the grocery store, right next to the Crisco, lard, and other shortenings. We've never bought any.

I save my bacon grease. I keep mine in a food grade container in the fridge. Adds wonderful flavor to soups, cream sauces for scalloped potatoes etc.
I don't use a lot but waste not want not.
I truly believe we need to get back to basics.

My Mom had a little container on the stove for as long as i can remember and it has a strainer on the inside and a lid. That container sits on my stove now. You pour the hot bacon grease in it and it strains it. I use bacon grease in green beans and use it to make biscuits and all kinds of cooking. I put some in the bottom of my cast iron skillet for cornbread and drizzle a little on top before i bake it. Now im getting hungry....................Curdog

We still save and use it like Grandma did.

Also- the first rule of Southern cooking is: Save all bacon grease.
In school: We learn lessons, and are given tests.
In life: We are given tests, and learn lessons.

OK People. Enough of this idle chit-chat.

Have a container I add to when I cook bacon, use it when I need to fry stuff. My Mom did it and I thought everyone did the same.

It was used to cook with when I was a kid and I have not seen any need to change. I filter mine thru a paper towel to store. Nev had had it go bad. Even when left on the counter. Best thing to make popcorn with. Add a little butter, salt and jalapano powder. Good stuff.

Have a container sitting at the corner of the stove. Don't use a lot of it, but its a must have when I make cornbread. Use it in the skillet and add it to the batter. Use it in my green beans too and when I fry eggs.
Grandad used it when frying chicken and for chicken fried steak.

I remember my mother and grandmother always had a can of bacon grease on the back of the stove. One of the things I miss the most was cornbread baked in a cast iron skillet with bacon grease. In fact my wife and I were just talking about that this morning.
