    WW Contamination

Have any of the forumers heard or read about wheel weights being contaminated with Zinc? I read in another forum where USA made wheel weights are being contaminated with recycled scrap from Asia with possibly large amounts of zinc in them. It was stated that these WW's can really mess up a mould because the zinc sticks very hard to the mould surface. Anyone have an opinion on this? One more thing I would like to ask is how popular or workable is IMR 4198 in cast boolit loads especially .303 Brit. & 30/06?

No way zinc contamination's going to be hard to get out of a mould.

Yes, plenty of Zinc wheel weights exist, no they won't ruin molds. Zinc just makes it harder to get good mold fill out without much higher temperatures.

I have not heard about this or experienced it myself but would seem like it still wouldn't be a problem as long as you kept your smelting temp down below the melting point of zinc.

Zinc melts at a higher temp then lead. So the zinc just floats to the surface and gets skimmed off with the rest of the crud.

Thanks Gents, I was a little concerned about that but guess it's not really an issue.

Do a search on "zinc" here and you should get 20 or so pages of hits!
