totally FRUSTRATING FUTILE experience with Microsoft tech support

ever since the 11/9 monthly windows update # KB 4023057 has been installing successfully every morning slowing my windows 10 desktop + using up disc space - over 9 open cases in over 6 weeks, many many hours with online tech support to no avail - been lied to, kept on open chat for over 6 hours yesterday after being told to stay on chat + level 2 tech will call soon - constant reports + feedback have generated no replies or help -
any ideas to point me in a direction to obtain help that will not put another dent in my my social security check -

Sounds like turning off auto-updates will fix the issue. That is as long as I understand the issue correctly.

Did this on both mine & the wife's laptop. Otherwise the updates just kept on going, rendering the machine unusable.

I'm with 45_colt. I have disabled updates on all my and my wifes laptops. I do NOT want them trying to downgrade to windows 11.

thanks for the replies - i have done that over the past weeks + it still returns after updates resumes - 1 MS tech deleted it + hid it , that worked for 1 day + 1 start up -

mine will not let me stop upgrades so i turn the wifi connection of after each use and all night, they like to push upgrades at night. so far so good.

Several years ago I got an iPad as a gift. I ditched the PC and I haven’t had any issues since then.

again thanks for the replies - ditching the desk top + getting an i pad is just not a viable option for me - disabling the wifi also stops numerous other things that wife + daughter use at various times -

Are you sure you were talking/chatting with Microsoft tech?

If you googled it you probably were connected to someone in a foreign country. If you had to pay with a credit card to talk to a next level then you got scammed. They also will bill you that amount to your credit card every month for their "tech service" which won't be able to help because it's a scam and they really know nothing nor can help. I almost got caught in such a scam yesterday.

In the long term, you're better off switching to Linux, even if you have to pay someone to do it for you.

You will not have downtime again due to automatic updates, and your machine will also become immune to viruses.

Your machine will also run much faster than it does now.

Did that several years ago and never looked back. Only problem is the few programs that don't do well under Wine. I've not been able to find any tax programs that work on Linux and require Windoz to run.

For a computer that is used for Internet surfing, word processing, email, etc the user will never know the difference - except all the programs are FREE!!

it was definitely a MS site - but all the lower level MS tech are MS contractors + not directly employed by MS -

i am currently looking at Linux ... Mint 21.1 ..... need to up grade win 7 machine and a win 10

mint is a easy install for the basic stuff

just going to start on a fresh/ new sst/ hard dive and stick the win 7 & win 10 in a box in case i ever need it

i have win 10 and i went app 24 plus hours not able to use it ..... it was doing up grades..... had to be restarted a gazillion times

I've been using Linux Lite for several years now. It is N O T like a lite beer, it is a simple, very easy to use, looks like Windows Operating System and is a no-brainer for anyone using Windows XP or 10. It is a full OS without all the added built in apps you will never use. But still has the functions you really want for day-to-day operation. Check it out.

Linux is an operating system built by a distributed community of people, who donate their time to the project. There are many thousands of contributors, and many thousands of applications built for it.

To get Linux, you can download an ISO image, and burn it to a DVD.

I recommend the Kubuntu distribution. It's what I have on all my machines. I switched my wife, who is not tech savvy, to Linux because of the amount of sensitive business information that goes through her machine, so she didn't have to worry about viruses. Initially she was a bit overwhelmed because there was no Start button. Now she cruises through on a dual screen setup.

It's critically important to backup to an external drive first, before you try anything.

To check it out, boot your computer with the DVD, and choose the option that permits you to try it out without installing. Not all flavours of Linux do this, I know Kubuntu does.

You will need someone to back up your data for you, and store it to an external hard drive before you install. You may be using a Microsoft mail client, in which case the local mail has to be exported, and imported to the new installation, for use in Thunderbird or Evolution. Whoever you get to to do this for you needs to know how to do that.

I suggest you start by asking around amongst the young people near you to find out who the tech geeks are that use Linux - I'm sure you will find that one of them volunteers to do it for free for you - the Linux community is like that.

Run "wushowhide.diagcab" and hide the update that causes the problem. Windows will not attempt to install hidden updates.
