Anybody have one of these new rifles? I'm looking hard at buying one, would like some opinions.

A small correction...

The receiver is supplied by Uberti, which Pedersoli heat treats to their own specifications.
All other parts are of Pedersoli design and manufacture.

I bought one in 38-55 from Cherry's. Just got the sights installed. Have not fired it yet. Nice fit and finish. The barrel is not finished bright blue but rather in a non glare finish(read that flat black/blue).

I saw that boolit described on the BPCR board. Got a little confused. Is the mould being produced by Paul Jones or is that just his #2 elliptical nose being utilized. I would be interested in that boolit. I now only have the 250 gr Lee and the 255 gr Saeco moulds.

Mine slugs .374 bore and .3795 groove.

Since Dan posted the diagram publicly, I suppose you could have anybody cut you a mould. But Dan gets his moulds from Paul Jones, and (probably) most of the Jones noses came from Dan.

Did you save a copy of the diagram? A lot of Dan's drawings seem to have short internet lives...

If you know the bore and groove dimensions, you may think you know what size bullet you can shoot. But some 38-55's suffer from a problem where the chamber throat is too small to take a bullet that fits the groove diameter.

That doesn't happen to be the case with the new Pedersoli, but I will do you a favor (anyway) and post the chamber diagram...



AND in case bullshot didn't grab a copy of the bullet diagram...

I did go back and copy the boolit from the BPCR board. Thanks for the chamber specs. Never know what will be needed. Maybe good weather this weekend and I can try her out.

any idea what weight that bullet goes in 20:1? NRA silly-wet rules. I have DanT's 380gr "Christmas Tree" design by Steve Brooks.

Got some decent weather this week so went to the range with the High Wall. So here' the story. New Starline brass(long 2.125), Saeco 250 gr SA62738 boolit sized .380, carnuba red lube, Unique 9gr as well as other powders, win lr primer.
Brass was new and not sized just ran through a Lyman M die, loaded, bollit seated to crimp groove and lightly crimped. Almost every shot key-holed at 50 and 100 yds. The bore of the rifle is .374 and groove is .3795.
When I got home I measured the OA length of the chamber and leade to the rifling with a Sinclair tool and that is when I went to slip a boolit into the fired case. No go. I measured the inside of the case mouth and found it to be .374 although deeper it measured .381. Measured the Lyman M die expander and its .374. So I took the fired cases and just ran them through the M die and flared the mouth just to start the boolit and loaded the cases as before only no crimp. Back to the range. No keyholes at either 50 or 100 yds. Several groups at 100 yds at about 1 in nothing over 2 in. So now I'm happy. I'm going to play with the depth of the seated boolit to see if I can improve. Old eyes and iron sights don't help.
I'm guessing that the new cases swag-ed the boolits a little in the first loading to give me a dia too small for the bore, hence the keyholes. Any other thoughts? I know the twist on this rifle was designed for heavy boolits 1-12, and using greenhill's formula with the Saeco boolit optimum twist is 1-18 but the second loading proved that the boolit stabilized.

Hi Bullshot,

The Greenhill formula does not give you the optimum twist for a given bullet. It gives you the MINIMUM twist that will stabilize a given bullet. I'd think your 12" twist would be fine with whatever bullet you want to shoot in it. Glad you got it to work well, I've been following these 38-55 threads as someday I'd sure like to have one.

I have no idea.
However, since it is intended for long range, it will be up there with the heavier 38-55 choices. Also, due to the slender nose, 16-1 alloy may be a better choice.

Theodore writes that he and 'Doc' Lay have been dinking quite a bit with .38 caliber rifles and bullets of this general shape. The harder alloy (Lay uses 15-1) seems to give them groups half the size of their 20-1 bullets.
