    Guess on velocity?

    I have a .375 Winchester Ruger#3.

A pleasant accurate plinking load is the Lee 250 grain over 8 grains of Unique.

Any guesses what velocity would be?

    Real close to 1,000 fps.

An old post here tells of a guy with a RCBS 250gr. in that cal. going 1143 with 9.5 of Unique.

    I’ve got an injured shoulder.

Too light for deer at 50 yards and under?

    I'd guess around 1k too.

With the same LEE 250 gr FN over 7 gr of Reddot is 1,100 ish in my 38-55 (Win 94 w/ 24" bbl) I would guess 1,000+ for 8 gr of Unique. That is in the range or real close to a 44 mag revolver velocity, a friend uses a 10 mm Auto out of a tree stand and has taken several deer over the years.

Quickload says ~ 1170 fps. Without refining the load parameters in the model, that's really no more than a S.W.A.G.

At 800 foot-pounds, some states would rank it too light for deer. Knowing as I do a guy who killed a doe under his tree stand with a .32 S&W (short) revolver, I wouldn't rule it out if you get close enough and can shoot.

I'd try putting a fairly thick pad under the buttstock and see if you can pump up the speed some.
I've used a common kitchen hot pad safety pinned on my jacket to tame some heavy recoil
back in my full house 180grain .300WinMag days. It made a HUGE difference.

If you can't tolerate enough recoil for the cartridge to really do its job well--
I'd move to something with much lighter and faster bullets, or put deer hunting on the list of things I can't do anymore.

My RCBS Cast Bullet manual states a 250 gr. cast bullet with 9.0 grs. of Unique is 1176 fps.
