    Problem wth .308 , 99 Savage

My wife inherited her Dad's Model 99 clip fed Savage. When you put the magazine in, you can't close the lever/bolt. Anyone else experience this?
    Quick fix?
    Thanks

Will it close with the follower pressed down?

I misspoke! With the mag in, it won't open the action. The tang safety is off. Sorry, it's been a while!

It won't open the action when you put in a loaded mag or just won't open, mag empty or full. If it works empty but not full, take one round out and see what happens. I have had mags that just won't feed when filled to stated capacity.

OK, I'm confused. Are you saying the action is locked shut (closed)? If so, is a round chambered, is the clip in the rifle, just what is the condition of the rifle? Have you successfully fired the rifle since you received it? Have you been able to cycle rounds through the action since you received it?

I have savage model 99C / .308 and I have noticed that the tang safety if not lubricated and kept clean sometimes will not engage. Your problem may be related to that tang safety. If the tang safety is engaged you wouldn't be able to work the lever to disengage the bolt. The lever will have a small amount of play even with the safety engaged. Try moving the lever and working the safety at the same time to disengage that safety.

If I remove the magazine I can work the action. My wife has taken a couple deer with it, started acting up last year. The safety is free and holds the action when on, when off, I feel the bolt move a bit and then hang up.
    Thanks

Have sav 300s but none with a clip. Easy-est way.
Could set the troubled clip aside and use the spare.

The problem will be something fouling and preventing the bolt from dropping down ,as it does to unlock....so the back part of the magazine is where to look.

I filed a little off the mag and that did the trick.
    Thanks all.
