I plan on trying it out in the near future myself, though my club only has 300 yards.

    My attempt but only 265 yards....and with a scope......and with smokeless powder....and a bench rest....LOL

I think that was with my Marlin 1894CB though....anyhow, it's about the cartridge!!!

offhand at 400yards - all five dead centre - I am struggling just a bit with that - Winchester was a salesman first and this was the era of the travelling medicine men and their snake oil ...............................? I guess its possible

Take note of the size of the bullseye - 22 inches - darn near TWO FEET across. Still Winchester advertising

These were the superstars of their day. There was no NBA or NFL.

That's the whole point, 22" is awesome at those distances with this cartridge.
My attempt at 265 yards, with a scope and bench rest...and I am old, blind and shake worse than a dog trying to crap peach seeds!

I'm thinking the bullseye would have to be that size to even see it at 4-5 hundred yards. And shooting off hand at those distances. I don't even like peaches and I would be doing good to put one on the target.

That group is about half the size of the bullseye. I'll take a 12" group offhand at 400 yards any day. Especially with a .44-40.

In all honesty, as much as I like to pull folk's chains, the bullet spread on the 400 targets cant be true or that makes them 4" groups......right?

Now the 500 yard square target looks realistic.

I tried to zoom in on one of the 400 yard targets till it matched the size of the 110 yard holes, this is what I see.

If the 400 yard bullseyes are 22", that makes those groups about 12" or so. Maybe 8" on the smaller group. That'd be 2MOA, which would be impressive with any rifle offhand.

Very impressive for those that can do it, but it proves the rifle and cartridge was capable.

I measured the 400 yard target - bull = 3/4 inch, 5 shot group = 5/16 horizontal ---- so a tad over 9 inches ---- the markers make it look like a much smaller group at first glance.

Some of those old guys could shoot for sure - an old dog trapper mate showed me a target he shot for a bet years ago - told the story first - what was the target ? match box at 50 yards - 10 shots (our match box is 2 1/4" long x 1 1/2" wide) ---said we both got ten on - said I won cause mine was a bit neater as he pulled the match box out of his pocket - ours are redhead brand - he had one ragged hole in the centre of the redhead emblem - when I tried to congratulate him he was dismissive "aw we were shooting off a rest, I used to be able to do that standing up" open sights with a BRNO .22

And we also do not know how many other targets were shot. What was the barrel length ? What sights ? Outdoors ?
And was the shooter leaning against a post ? That would still be freehand in some areas.
But I also agree. That would be some good shooting.

People can believe whatever turns their crank.

2 MOA at 400 yards standing with an 1873 is BS for this guy. The NRA High Power target at 200 yards is 7 inches. We have better shooters, better guns and better ammunition today and perfect scores standing are not too common.
