Definitely a genius and not just sporting arms. Some of his designs are timeless, the 1911 as an example. Another is the M2 50 caliber machine gun. It is basically a grown up 1917 30 caliber machine gun. Development of the M2 began just after WW1 and was adopted by the military in 1933. Approaching 90 years in service by our military and it seems they have yet to find anything better to replace it. An interesting story concerning the M2 was one sent to Anniston for retrofit to A2 configuration about 10 years ago. Turns out this particular weapon had been in service since 1933 and this was the first time it had been back to the arsenal for rebuild or upgrade. All of the critical specs were still in tolerance and in fact better than some more recently produced. A pretty impressive run in front line service and a credit to build quality of the old time gun makers.

I love the fact that he designed and patented the terrific 1897 takedown for Winchester but then he was forced to redesign a totally different takedown system when he designed the Stevens 520-30 shotguns. Wonder if he could have come up with a third way to break a sg in two? What could he have done with a computer and a CNC machine?

No telling what he could have done.

As it is, I wonder if he was even human!

I think you can say he did just that; look at the takedown system of the Remington 17/Ithaca 37.

And after that triumph, he turned to doubles and came up with the Superposed over and under.
Everyone reading this thread is thinking of how many of their guns are JMB designs or descendants thereof.....

One of the things I cannot figure out is how he figured out how much pressure the steels would take at certain places........The other is that he designed all of these goodies with a pencil and paper.............

I seriously think we should declare Jan. 23 as John Moses Browning day! A day that we can celebrate all the shooting sports.

If you’re ever near Salt Lake City there is a JMB museum a reasonably short drive to the north. They have examples of his guns and the various prototypes that were built to prove each concept leading up to the production model.
