Installing sml57 sight help

I finally found an sml 57 Lyman peep I've had in the back of a drawer (hiding from me the sneaky little bugger)

I have a 54 cal renegade this little dude will be going on but....I know I'll need to mark drill and tap the rear tang. Also need to replace or install the upper tang screw.

Question I have is, does anyone know what size that top screw is or should be (I assume it would need to be an eighth longer to account for the thickness of the sight.) Also want to match the taper on the sight well so it gets good surface contact with the screw ( ie so the taper isn't too shallow or steep and giving me contact just on the upper or lower part of the screw hole)

Anyone have suggestions on which screws work well on this?

Before I go into the project anyone have tips I should take into account?

Seems I've seen somewhere I may need to notch the stock some too to make way for the sight on the left side too. I'll test fit and see when I'm back at the gunsafe

Most of those have an alumium base, so the last couple I installed I filed the base to clear the stock, then used a black sharpie to recolor what I had filed on.

That is what I am seeing in Ron's tutorial too. Makes me nervous but I guess carving out the stock should make me more nervous....

Questions out about spacer under front sight hole to make sight sit up more vertical. How would I test to see if it is perpendicular to the bore? Ie how do I know if I should add more or less shim thickness to get it in a perpendicular plane to the bore

Run a piece of thread thru your rear peep hole out to the front sight.
See if the string is spaced the same all along the barrel.
It at least gets you in the ball park.
That's how I laid out sights on flat topped barrels when I first started building my rifles.
Now I check my sights with a Laser Bore Sighter

That string trick also works on barrel mounted rear sights.
You just have to find a way to anchor the string into the notch of your rear sight.
Measuring the height of the notch above the barrel and measuring the front sight height above the barrel.

Use painter's tape. Btw, I've been "bore sighting" with monofilament [fishing line] for years because it works like a charm.

Aligning the height of the sights , gets you on paper.
I use a front sight that is the same height as the rear sight on the flats of your barrel.
If I have an adjustable rear sight , then set it at the lowest point and match your front sight to that height.
When you take your first three shots ,say at 25 yards , you will see if your sights need modification , replacement or just adjusting.
Using that thread method on peep sights mounted on your tang let's you string a line parallel to the top of the barrel since the height of the rear sight is hard to measure to the top of the barrel

John, You cut a~36" length of monofilament, pull it taut, and tape it in place on the center of the front sight with painter's tape or something similar. What you want is a straight [string] line between front and rear sights and a line parallel to the top of the barrel. This will get you on paper @ 25 yd. You can do fine adjustments for windage and elevation by moving the rear sight, which is easy if you've installed a receiver sight. Btw, fine and final adjustments should be done @ 50 yd., if not farther.
