    One heavy mold

I found a Lyman 452460 4 cavity mold with handles. It is in very good shape and I cast a run with it last night and it once it reaches temp it casts like a dream. One cavity is a bit sticky, but I figure there is likely a a small bur somewhere on the parting line. Nothing a magnifying glass and a little patience won't solve. The bullet is also a little different from my two cavity I purchased about 15 years ago. It has a smaller meplat, smaller diameter of the nose at the juncture of the nose and body and a curved shape to the nose where the nose of the the two cavity bullet is a truncated cone. It will be interesting to see how the two compare shooting.

But man is it heavy. This is the first time in some 35 years I've used and been grateful for a mold guide. I've used Lee 6 cavity and NOE 4 and 5 cavity molds for the better part of 20 years now and they are a breeze to work with. This thing is a monster. While the extra weight of the iron really levels the mold temperature out (I can step into the kitchen from the garage and refresh my ice water without worrying about heat loss) the dang thing drives my arthritis crazy.

I have a 4 cavity Lyman 25 cal also . It seems like it and the brass M-P 2 cav weigh about the same . They're both light weights compared to the 8 cav H&G #130 . That thing is about 8# and takes another 1/4 to fill it up .

Fortunately one doesn't have to run these behemoths a long time to make a bunch of bullets or take a break while the pot recovers .

I like my four cavity 452460, but I don't like the nutcracker style handles Lyman used for them. I can use them, just not what I prefer and I'm too frugal (sounds so much better than cheap) to buy some of the new ones for one mold.

I did get lucky, in that the four cavity boolits weigh within a grain of both the DC molds I have.

I haven't tried casting with it since tendonitis reared its ugly head though.

I've got some MP 4 cavity brass molds and those get heavy real quick. I always tell myself when I'm ordering a new one to "Get Aluminum" but I never do. Those brass molds are just too pretty.

I am cheap in replacing , there I said it not froogal here as I waste money , but cheap out on the handles as I had them .

Had the tendonitis , it went away , it actually felt better when casting , doctor said I would need surgery I think thats what fixed it as I do not want them slicing and dicing .

Got a couple 4x cavity molds … PITA
Stick with the 2x ones if you want a multi cavity
Mold inventory… 200 plus, majority are single cavity

It only takes a few minutes to cut a wood support to plop the mold on while filling it.
Get fancy and make an aluminum beverage can cover so the wood does not burn.

    Right On!
Careful arrangement of the work area and attention to ergonomics can make a big difference in how much work we have to do. A mold guide is very much your little buddy.
