Stolen Ruger #1-A .243 *new scope*

I got a call from my local gun store to notify me that some powder I have had on order was finally in stock. Hopped on down there yesterday to go and pick it up and while in the store I noticed four Ruger #1's in the consignment rack. I said "self", turn your head away and do NOT look at those demon Ruger's. As you can imagine I didn't listen to my poor advise and sauntered over to the rack of impending evil. There in all of their glory were two #1-V's (.223 and 22/250) and two 1-A's (7X57 and 243 Win.). I have long been a proponent of hunting with a 7X57 and own three of them. My boy shot his first hog with one and it has never met an animal it couldn't drop. It would have been my first choice. BUT, there was light surface rust on the barrel and the rear sight was missing. I have no interest in 223's or the 22/250 as I own a slew of 223's and a custom built 220 Weatherby Rocket (Roy's very FIRST wildcat). Hence the 243 was carefully looked over. There are two slight rust spots, one on the grip cap and one beneath the front sight band. Both of them can be cleaned with WD-40 and OOOO steel wool to be almost invisible. A quick patch run down the bore showed it to be in pristine condition.

Well, a cursory glance at the hanging tag had me almost breaking my arm to get to my wallet. It set me back a whole $350.00. Now I don't know about your neck of the woods, but in mine this is a steal!

I went to the range today to fireform some brass for my new acquisition.

One of the only things that detract from this rifle is the scope that it has on it. It is a 3X9X50 abortion that weighs 23 ozs. and throws off the balance of this slim stalking rifle. One of my friends runs a small swap meet there and I found myself rummaging through his "treasures". I saw an objective lense peeking from a broken dilapidated box and pulled the entire scope from the pile. I asked my friend what he wanted for the scope, and he stated that $25.00 should do it. Another bout of almost "breaking my arm" to pay for it ensued.

What I had found was a pristine, never been mounted, Weaver K-4 60-B scope. I'm sure it's 9.5 oz. weight will go perfectly with the Ruger.

    Wow.

However; You do need to say three 'Hail Marys and a couple of Anna-Godda-da-Vedas' and all sins will be forgiven.

Then go back and get the others to market properly.

I don't even like Ruger No. 1's but at that price I would have bought them all.....sooner or later someone who does like them will come along with something I do like and I'd have plenty of trade fodder. Go get the others! Just where is the southernmost state of the union?

If that one was priced like that how were the others priced ? I would have bought all 4 in a second.

Same here! If all were similarly priced I'd have purchased all of them, whether I wanted them or not. Around here that's less than half price!

It would have been very difficult for me to walk out without the 7x57 if it was similarly priced.

I do not need it, but have wanted one for decades. Agree with your opinion of the caliber.

Sell that scope to recoup some of your investment- it just don't look right on that stalking rifle.

That was the way it used to be .....something 30 years old would sell for 1/3 new price.....people had more sense and less money.

Had to check the date on your post. That price would be a bargain in 1999! Sounds like you were in the right place at the right time. Congratulations.

Heck I could have gotten four for one! I think that this seller is getting rid of his collection, or it is an estate sale that is slowly being sold off. I bought a .338 Mag #1-S for $500.00 a couple of months ago.

Sweet Christmas present stubshaft. You'll have lots of fun.

I think you said you have some 243's already. This is what I would do for a real easy caliber change.

Look up the cartridge diamensions for your 243 and for the 6mm-284.

Think a 6mm-284 might be a fun ticket to have.
