    358 Win powder

I had used 3031 in my 358 winchester with some success. Unfortunately I am about out and not sure where to get some. I need to work up a load using 230 grn cast bullets. Target velocity is 1800 fps or so. Powders I have on hand that may fit the bill are IMR 4064, both the H and IMR 4350, and H4895. Also have a bit of winchester 748. Any suggestions where to start? Don't really want to waste a lot of primers experimenting here! I also have Unique, not sure I can safely get that high with it.

    In a .358 Win Savage 99, I've had excellent results with 748 & 4064 with jacketed bullets.

For Cast, with RCBS's 35-200 gr FN/GC, I'm using SR4759 or its equivalent from Jeff Bartlett. I call the latter, clone 4759 and have found it just about identical to the original SR4759...loads run 18 to 19 grains with either. I estimate 18.5 will produce 1600 fps from my 22" bbl. I size to 0.360" and cast with WCWW + 50-50 lube.

Best regards and work up to these loads if interested. Rod

H4895 is my favorite powder for cast bullets in rifles. I use it in my 358 Winchester with great success.

might try 4350 stating load would be about 38- 40 grains should be pretty close to 1800fps

It was with a jacketed bullet, but my BLR on a test run put two 225 Sierras in the same hole and a third 1/2 bullet diameter to the left at 100 meters at the indoor range I volunteer in. The powder was 48 gr Ramshot TAC, WLR primer. It will be an excellent black bear round when I'm drawn for a license. 43 gr TAC will produce around 2000 fps.

20 years ago I worked up a load using the RCBS 35-200-FN in a 356 Win with 41.0gr IMR 4064 that chronographed an avg of 1948 fps in a 20" barrel. Used that load to take a buck pictured in a 35 Rem hunting bullet thread.

Best jacketed loads tested in this rifle were 46.0 IMR 4064 with Rem 200gr SP and 48.0 748 with Speer 220gr. Today I use more H4895 than any other powder for cast and jacketed in most mid-sized cartidges but didn't try it in the 356 Win back when working up loads for it.

H4895 is my go to... Only I let my supplies dwindle.

4759 works well as does 5744 for me.

For jacketed I use two and I could live well with just TAC & a Sierra 225g. But 748 works real well with s Speer 220 too. Good velocity and excellent accuracy.

I just loaded up fifty with 748/reformed LC cases, its a compressed loading but shoots really well with that 220g Speer.

One of the things I like about the 358 Winchester and H4895 is that you can't get enough powder in the case to exceed Hodgdon's max load recommendation.

Curious, what is the equivalent powder from GI Brass?

I've used IMR4895, 2015, and TAC in the 358 for moderate to max charges with 200-225 grain jacketed and cast bullets. Currently using TAC, acts a lot like IMR 4895 for full loads, work OK for moderate. 4198 works well for moderate loads.

Who me lol. Sorry as I have not used the powders the original poster asked about. But I will say to do a search here on the forum and you will find enough good information on the 358 Winchester to make you get glasses. one member that did great work on the forum is Ben.

Most powders on the faster side will produce similar results. 4198 worked really well for me. 3031 did also. Have some TAC and WIN748 as well to work some loads for as Im out of 4198.
