How much copper ok? 96 tin 4 copper?

I have a chance to get some 96 tin 4 copper.

It's ingots leftover from so.eone making Babbitt I think.

Is this useable. I cast mostly with range scrap..but wasn't sure what the copper content would do. Thanks.

    See this pinned thread: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...s-this-further

If you want to add ~ 2% tin, that Babbit in your casting alloy would end up adding 0.08% copper, or 0.0008 final copper content. In that thread the posters were expounding on the benefits of copper at 1/2 to 3% final content.

I'd buy it for the tin and consider the copper a big bonus. (copper make the alloy more elastomeric, really helpful for higher velocity boolits)
After you get done alloying down the tin with lead, the % of copper will be minimal

Thanks guys. I'm going to grab them. Guy has 4 pounds leftover from making Babbitt. I can trade him out of it.

I would jump on it. Make 2 or 3 oz mini mixing coins. Toss a coin into a pot of range scraps.

Nice. Thanks. My other tin has been nuggets and that's what I did. Toss in a nugget to sweeten.

    Thanks for the info guys!

I wish I would have kept the Babbitt out of all those old fords I rebuilt when I was in the machine shop.

If I only knew then what I know now.

I ended up casting all mine into .5 oz boolits --great booth for alloying and sweetening the pot.

That should work fine. I have used recycled tin pewter as a substitute for pure tin as it much cheaper.
