Leading with one load and not the other

Been doing some load testing with my JES rebored 336c in 38-55 and something has me stumped. I resized my boolets to .377
(Lee 250 gr FP, converted to plain base) as he suggested and loaded a few up with 10 gr of unique. Results were good with decent accuracy at 50 yds. I cleaned it and noticed just a few very tiny specs of lead in the patches, after 10 rounds I didn't think it was bad. Then loaded up 4 with 19 gr of A2400, accuracy was the same but the leading was more severe. I could see streaks in the bore that weren't there previously. Could the alloy be too soft? It's supposed to be ww and range lead..

19 grains of 2400 might just be pushing it harder than the alloy can take.

Gas Checks?

What's the speed on those?

If it was me I'd be using the Unique load.

Could be pushing those plane based kind of hard. I keep around 1200fps with plane based bullets. I use gas checks for anything over 1400fps

You dont mention a lube either. Maybe a gas check or paper patch would solve the leading of the A2400

They were sized and lubed with BAC from White Label and I’m guessing over 1400 FPS, going to try pc next in the hotter loads. My thoughts as well, probably too fast.

For that velocity, you should have approximately 12 bn.

need a gas check with that load, i use 18 grains in my 308 and get good accuracy with a gas check.

Your pressures & vel are probably quite a bit higher. Harder alloy &/or a gc.

It might need a "better" lube with the 2400 load ... Lube and Unique loads are fairly easy on the bore .
The 2400 load is getting heavy ... better lubricant and or the much hated gas check .

Personally I don't have any problems with gas checked boolits , Skeeter Skelton used them on the Lyman 358156 in the 357 magnum loads , I tried them and was well pleased . All Magnum handgun , handgun loads over 1000 fps and all smokeless rifle loads get gas checks ... no leading and great accuracy .

I am another that actually likes gas checks. But, if you have a PB bullet then that isn't an option. We used to use poly wads with PB bullets in straight wall cases. They worked well in loads of moderate velocity.

You could use a plain base gas check on them.

My 38-55 (admittedly black powder) is running a dead soft (30-1)/0380"-sized bullet.
OOC, why are you sizing to 0.377" ?

My rifle has been rebored, JES recommended to size cast to .376-.377... most factory rifles are usually in the .379-.380 range.. that's my understanding.

Everyone's going to scream & yell, but the easiest thing to try then is going to pure Lee Liquid Alox applied & dried this way:

While pic looks like a heavy coat of Alox in the grooves, it really isn't. Just "greasy fingers"
Note also how soft the Alloy is ... ~ BHN 6-7
postscript: Make sure the Alox is dry.
(Did I mention dried Alox ?)
