    norma 205 powder in 30-06

I am fairly new to reloading. I've only reloaded 9mm. I recently bought a 30-06 and had asked about loading the 30-06 with tite group powder. i didnt try any yet.

I went to a gun show today and bought some 30-06 brass and I asked a guy if he had any powder to load 30-06. he sold me old norma 250 powder in a tin can. He said it would work ok. any thoughts and recommendations on a starting load. I also bought some j5p 180 grain bullets

I have some old cans of Norma MRP. The metal seals under the screw on cap are very good on my old cans. There are rumors that Norma MRP replaced Norma 205.

It looks like Norma 205 is similar to IMR 4831, RL-22, and Norma MRP. All those powders do very well with 180 jacketed loads in 30-06.

Apparently Speer #8 has quite a bit of load data for Norma 205. Maybe someone who has a copy of that manual could post some info.

These threads have a some info in them.

P.s. If it was me in my gun. A strong bolt action, no pumps, no Garands, no lever actions. I would start with Norma MRP starting load data minus 10% and work up. It would be better to get the Speer #8 data.

One of the first Handloader magazines had some data for N205 in the .30-'06, using Nosler partitions. They got velocities up to about 2900 fps, safely.

Norma had trouble making the powder, without off lots, so they made MRP with the same burn rate. Be careful, as Norma has made not just MRP, but also a MRP2, and perhaps others.

    FYI

Norma recalled 205 as it was involved in numerous SEEs. I was personally involved in one of them with a 280 Remington and Sierra 168 MKs.
